The Mechanical Designer I supports both new product development and sustainment engineering within the Satellite Communications (SATCOM) engineering organization. Working onsite and in close coordination with Engineering and Manufacturing teams, this role produces electro/mechanical designs translated into accurate sketches, layouts, and production-ready drawings. The position is execution-focused, documentation-driven, and critical to ensuring engineering intent is effectively transferred into manufacturable hardware.
YOU WILL BE ACCOUNTABLE FOR:
- Partner with Satellite Communications Engineering and Manufacturing to produce electro/mechanical designs represented through sketches, layouts, and detailed drawings.
- Support both new product introduction (NPI) and sustainment efforts by developing and maintaining accurate engineering documentation.
- Confer with Engineers or the Engineering Services Manager to resolve documentation ambiguities and clarify design intent.
- Create initial and developmental sketches, layouts, drawings, and assemblies using established drafting conventions and engineering standards.
- Develop and revise CAD designs in accordance with company procedures, regulatory requirements, and customer specifications.
- Update drawings during development or after release to support Engineering Change Orders (ECOs).
- Review completed drawings to ensure clarity, accuracy, completeness, and conformance to applicable standards and graphics practices.
- Submit drawings for review and approval by engineering leadership and downstream manufacturing teams.
- Finalize designs and release production prints to Manufacturing.
- Ensure all drawings meet reproduction standards and include all components required for complete assemblies, including accurate and complete parts lists.
- Provide design support during build, assembly, and installation to ensure hardware is built in accordance with released design documentation.
- Verify that electro/mechanical drawings effectively communicate all engineering information required for manufacturing and product specification.
- Maintain current knowledge of drafting techniques, engineering procedures, manufacturing capabilities, and applicable standards to continuously improve design output.
- Develop technical competence through job performance and formal training.
- Perform other duties as assigned in support of program and business objectives.
YOU ARE THE RIGHT PERSON FOR THIS JOB IF YOU HAVE:
- Associate’s Degree in Drafting Technology or equivalent technical training OR four (4) years of directly related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Working knowledge of Computer-Aided Design and Drafting (CADD); SolidWorks experience required.
- Demonstrated ability to apply fundamentals of mechanical design, strength of materials, applied geometry, trigonometry, and technical mathematics in an electro/mechanical drafting environment.
- Thorough knowledge of engineering standards, specifications, drafting practices, and documentation control procedures.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proven problem-solving capability with high attention to detail and documentation accuracy.
- Solid computer proficiency and mathematical aptitude.
- Ability to operate effectively in a collaborative, cross-functional engineering environment.
- Self-motivated, adaptable, and able to manage change in a fast-paced product development setting.
- Requires sustained mental focus and precision on detailed technical tasks.
- This position is 100% onsite; remote or hybrid work is not available.
- This position requires potential access to technology controlled under the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) or the Export Administration Regulations (EAR). The successful candidate must be a “U.S. Person” as defined under ITAR and EAR. In order to be a U.S. Person for ITAR and EAR purposes, you must (i) be a citizen or national of the United States; or (ii) be a lawful permanent resident of the United States; or (iii) a protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3).
