Job Title: Staff Accountant - Grants Focus

Location: Washington, DC

Job Type: Contract to Hire

  • Length: 3-6 months before conversion

Compensation:

  • Hourly Pay: $30-$35 / hour
  • Salary Conversion: $65,000-$73,000 / year

About the Role:

Our client, a highly respected nonprofit association based in Washington, DC, is actively seeking a Staff Accountant to join their growing team. This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to a mission-driven organization with national impact, collaborate within a large and well-established finance department, and further develop and refine your accounting skill set.


Work Environment:

  • Location: Washington, DC (downtown)
  • Schedule: On-site, 5 days/week during contract period
  • Hours: 35-hour workweek, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
    • 1-hour lunch
  • Hybrid: Eligible upon permanent conversion (after ~90 days)

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required
  • Industry Experience: Nonprofit accounting required
  • Technical Skills:
    • Microsoft Office 365 proficiency required
    • Advanced Excel skills required
    • Experience with iMIS & Great Plains is preferred
  • Accounting Knowledge:
    • Fund accounting experience strongly preferred
    • Solid understanding of accounting principles and GAAP
  • Soft Skills:
    • Strong attention to detail
    • Excellent communication (written and verbal)
    • Strong organizational and administrative skills
    • Flexible, reliable, and able to collaborate with internal teams and external vendors
  • Compliance: Proof of COVID-19 vaccination required (historical documentation acceptable)

Core Responsibilities:Grant Financial Management

  • Maintain accurate records of grant revenues and expenditures across multiple programs
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and private funder requirements
  • Monitor grant spending to ensure alignment with approved budgets and allowable costs

Reporting

  • Prepare timely and accurate financial reports for funders, program teams, and leadership
  • Assist with grant proposals and budget narratives
  • Monitor and analyze budget trends; provide cost-control recommendations

Accounting & Reconciliation

  • Record grant-related transactions in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards
  • Reconcile grant accounts and ensure proper expense allocation

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Prepare grant continuation documentation
  • Compile interim and final grant reports
  • Coordinate grant submissions with internal stakeholders and program leadership


Hiring Process

  • Round 1: Virtual panel interview with Controller & CFO
  • Target Start Date: 2 weeks from acceptance
