Title: Intake Specialist
Reports To: Intake Supervisor
FLSA: Non-exempt
Justice North seeks to fill the position for an Intake Specialist. This is a hybrid position based in our Northern Minnesota region, with virtual AND in-person office work, events, community outreach and meetings as needed.

Justice North provides free legal representation to low-income and senior citizens in 33 counties and 7 tribal nations. Justice North is an integral part of the justice system committed to the proposition that equal access to justice is a basic human right. In every case that we handle, our goal is always to help our clients reach sustainable, holistic resolutions to the problems they face. To that end, we work closely with community partners across our region.
The starting salary range for an Intake Specialist is $45,000-$65,000
Essential Functions
- Be available for regular telephone intake hours from 9 am to 4 pm, Monday through Friday, with an hour lunch break
- Conduct thorough needs assessments of all potential clients, including reviewing the nature of their legal issue, determining financial eligibility for Justice Norths services, and assessing the overall needs of clients calling
- Gather comprehensive client information, including demographics, income, assets, citizenship status, and other relevant data to determine eligibility for Justice Norths services based on program guidelines and policies
- Accurately process intake applications received through various channels, including phone, court, online, mail, and in-person
- Provide clear and concise information to clients and potential clients regarding eligibility criteria and available services
- Offer referrals to appropriate community resources for individuals who do not meet eligibility requirements
- Attend direct service outreach and clinics as requested to conduct applicant intakes
- Prepare clear and detailed case notes and task lists
- Gather necessary documentation from clients as required
- Ensure the confidentiality and security of all client information
- Stay informed of all relevant policies, procedures, and legal updates
- Provide compassionate and effective client service to all individuals who contact Justice North
- Communicate with clients in a clear, concise, and respectful manner
- Build and maintain positive relationships with clients and other staff
- Participate in meetings, organizational activities, and trainings as required
- Reliable and timely attendance to complete all job duties
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Experience in direct client contact in the legal or human services field strongly preferred
- Demonstrated awareness and sensitivity to the needs of the populations we serve
- Demonstrated ability to remain calm, empathetic and patient in a fast-paced environment and when dealing with difficult applicants
- Strong attention to detail
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Proven ability to solve problems quickly in a fast-paced environment
- Demonstrated good professional judgment
- Knowledge of client confidentiality rules and best practices
- Previous training or willingness to undergo training on trauma informed interviewing techniques
- Flexibility, adaptability, and willingness to accept additional duties as necessary
- Strong technical aptitude and skills
- Ability to work independently and with others with professionalism, respect, and collegiality
- Valid drivers license, and reliable transportation is necessary due to large geographic area served
Working Conditions and Physical Demands
- Hybrid/Remote with some community-based work
- Occasional evening, weekend and early morning hours
- Some travel required
