About the Role:
The Medication Access Coordinator is a vital member of the pharmacy team who works directly with patients to navigate and optimize their pharmacy benefits. This position focuses on reducing medication costs, improving access to therapies, and ensuring patients understand and utilize their pharmacy coverage and assistance effectively. The individual will be embedded in the clinical pharmacy team and collaborate closely with pharmacists, providers, and external partners to address barriers to medication access.
The Medication Access Coordinator will provide cross-coverage for both the clinical prior authorization and medication benefit counselor roles as needed to ensure continuity of services and support for patients.
This is a mobile role, requiring travel to multiple locations up to 20% of the time.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in pharmacy, healthcare, or insurance benefit coordination.
- Familiarity with insurance processes, prior authorizations, formulary management and medication assistance programs.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to handle sensitive patient information with confidentiality and professionalism.
- Registered Pharmacy Technician License to be obtained by date of hire
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in healthcare administration, health sciences, or related discipline.
- Experience specifically coordinating medication access or working within pharmaceutical patient support services.
- Previous experience in a supervisory or lead role.
- Experience working in a community health center or integrated clinical setting.
Responsibilities:
- Serve as a liaison between patients, pharmacies, and payers to resolve pharmacy benefit issues.
- Assist patients with benefit investigations, prior authorizations, formulary navigation, co-pay assistance, patient assistance programs, and appeals processes.
- Identify and implement cost-saving strategies to improve medication affordability and adherence.
- Educate patients on insurance coverage, co-pays, deductibles, and medication-related expenses.
- Monitor and track medication access issues and interventions using electronic health records and other internal systems.
- Collaborate with pharmacy and clinical teams to develop workflows that promote efficient medication access support.
- Support and evaluate the performance of the Medication Benefits Counselor and Clinical Prior Authorization Specialist.
- Provide backup coverage for both roles during periods of absence and high demand.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of payer requirements, patient assistance programs, and pharmacy benefit trends.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and data reporting as required.
