Communications Manager
Job Description
Ready to Lead the Conversation on the Future of Technology?
The Association for Uncrewed Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) is looking for a Manager of Communications who is not just seeking their next role but their next mission.
This is more than a traditional communications position. It is a rare opportunity to help shape how the world understands and engages with the most transformative technologies of our time, including autonomy, drones, robotics, and advanced mobility.
In this role, you will be at the center of innovation and policy. You will work directly with our C-suite leadership and have the full support of the Vice President of Public Affairs. Your work will drive high-impact communications strategies that increase our visibility, expand our influence, and clearly demonstrate our value to members, policymakers, and the public.
We are looking for a communicator who is strategic, creative, and energized by a fast-paced environment. You thrive under pressure, enjoy solving complex problems through clear messaging, and are passionate about telling compelling stories as technology continues to evolve.
What You Will Do
- Lead the development and execution of integrated communications strategies that support our mission, advocacy priorities, and growth objectives
- Create campaigns that increase industry visibility and drive awareness among members, media, and policymakers
- Build and manage relationships with national and trade media outlets and serve as the main point of contact for press inquiries
- Draft and distribute press releases, policy statements, op-eds, and articles that reinforce AUVSI’s leadership in the field
- Coordinate high-profile speaking engagements for executive leadership, including researching opportunities, managing submissions, and preparing speeches and presentations
- Develop and manage content that keeps members informed, engaged, and connected to our work and the broader industry
- Support government affairs efforts by communicating policy positions and advocacy priorities in a way that resonates with both technical and public audiences
- Collaborate with teams to promote events, conferences, and webinars, and develop messaging that drives attendance and engagement
- Lead our crisis communications strategy and be the voice of clarity and consistency when it matters most
- Contribute to our digital communications by overseeing content across our website, blog, and social media platforms
- Track key performance indicators to evaluate the effectiveness of our strategies and ensure alignment with organizational goals
- Oversee vendor relationships, budgets, and timelines to deliver high-quality communications projects on time and on brand
What We Are Looking For
- A “get sh*t done” attitude and approach to each day
- A minimum of five to seven years of experience in strategic communications, public affairs, media relations, or a related field
- A background in technology, innovation policy, or government relations is strongly preferred
- Strong writing and editing skills with the ability to tailor content for different audiences and platforms
- A proven track record of developing and executing high-impact communication strategies
- Experience working with executive leadership and managing thought leadership efforts
- Ability to manage multiple projects with tight deadlines and a high level of attention to detail
- Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work cross-functionally in a fast-paced environment
- Experience with content management systems, digital tools, and social media platforms
- Based in the DMV area and able to travel up to 20 percent of the time
Who You Are
- You are a strategic thinker who understands how messaging drives influence and impact
- You are a skilled storyteller who can take complex policy or technical issues and turn them into clear, compelling narratives
- You are a self-starter who takes initiative, meets deadlines, and thrives under pressure
- You are energized by innovation, curious about the future, and excited to be part of a team shaping the conversation around transformative technology
Working Environment
- Hybrid position based in Arlington, Virginia
- This role requires occasional travel and light physical activity such as walking, standing, or lifting materials up to 20 pounds during events
