The primary role of the phlebotomist is to assist in performing various duties including troubleshooting, training, and providing workflow recommendations. This position involves collecting and storing specimens according to established procedures and maintaining accurate records.

Responsibilities

  • Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, and record maintenance data.
  • Decontaminate equipment and update patient information.
  • Explain the venipuncture process and other specimen collections clearly and courteously.
  • Demonstrate techniques using straight and butterfly needles.
  • Understand and execute physicians' orders accurately.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.
  • Check test requisitions or computer labels against scripts for accuracy.
  • Package specimens for transport while maintaining sample integrity.
  • Store specimen samples at required temperatures and in appropriate containers.
  • Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
  • Attend annual department trainings.
  • Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to address inquiries.

Essential Skills

  • Proficiency in phlebotomy, blood draw, venipuncture, and specimen collection.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Experience in laboratory, medical, pediatric, geriatrics, and healthcare settings.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment.
  • Minimum of 6 months' experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 2 years of relevant experience.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $21.00/hr.
