Job Profile Summary
Technician II,Outside Plant is a seasoned professional capable of working with advanced telecommunications systems, including copper lines, fiber optic lines, and radio systems. The position goes beyond basic installation and maintenance; it involves complex troubleshooting and strategic enhancements of our network infrastructure. The ideal candidate will actively engage with both residential customers and business clients, requiring advanced technical expertise, superior problem-solving skills, and exceptional communication abilities. Reporting to the Outside Plant Supervisor, the Technician II will be instrumental in elevating Commnet’s service quality and ensuring unparalleled network reliability and customer satisfaction.
Duties and Responsibilities (included but not limited to):
- Executes sophisticated installations, testing, and repairs of network equipment, including fiber optic, copper, and radio systems. Proactively evaluates job sites for optimal service placement and meticulously documents all tasks to enhance network efficiency and effectiveness.
- Skillfully diagnoses and resolves complex issues within the fiber optic, copper, and radio networks, extending support to other departments for remote troubleshooting. Responds to emergency callouts and resolves after-hour technical issues, ensuring network integrity.
- Manages both aerial and buried plant infrastructure under diverse environmental conditions. Operates and maintains a variety of heavy machinery such as aerial trucks, trenchers, and bucket trucks, with a heightened focus on precision and safety.
- Delivers exemplary customer service, maintaining professional interactions with both residential and business clients to achieve high satisfaction rates. Represents Commnet with a focus on professionalism and reliability in all customer engagements.
- Rigorously adheres to safety protocols while operating equipment and climbing ladders, ensuring compliance with all safety standards. Stays informed about technological advancements and regulatory changes to maintain industry compliance and leadership.
- Independently manages inventory and oversees personal stocking duties, ensuring all assigned vehicles and equipment are maintained to the highest standards of operational efficiency and readiness.
- Demonstrates flexibility and dedication by being available to work evenings, weekends, and additional hours as needed to meet critical project deadlines and respond to network emergencies.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum Years Experience: 1 - 2 Yrs.
- Minimum Education: High School / Trade School or equivalent experience.

- Valid state driver's license required and must reside within 45 minutes of the reporting location.
- Must be physically fit to perform strenuous activities, including the ability to bend, stoop, squat, lift to 70 lbs., and work overhead for extended periods. Possesses advanced climbing skills, with the ability to safely scale poles up to 18 feet and ladders up to 30 feet, showcasing technical agility and compliance with safety standards.
- Demonstrates regular and reliable attendance, and resilience and flexibility by efficiently working under diverse weather conditions, coupled with a readiness to undertake unscheduled overtime to meet critical service demands.
- Proficient in utilizing Windows OS, Microsoft Office Suite, and other essential software programs. Possesses comprehensive understanding of home/SOHO network configurations including IP, DHCP, Wi-Fi, and RJ45, essential for sophisticated troubleshooting and network management.
- Exhibits a keen ability to accurately distinguish between various wire and cable colors, a critical skill for precise installations and troubleshooting in complex network environments.
- Must have knowledge and/or experience in the installation and troubleshooting of complex network technologies such as T1, DSO, digital loop carriers, high-speed internet, and wireless radios, ensuring high-performance telecommunications solutions.
- Demonstrates proficient working knowledge of a variety of testing and locating equipment critical for maintaining network integrity. This includes proficiency with tools such as Similar to EXFO, JDSU, VIAVI, OTDRs, and specialized locate equipment for both fiber optics and copper cable.
- Skilled in testing, splicing, and optimizing fiber optic infrastructure, with a particular focus on Passive Optical Networks (PON), crucial for delivering high-quality fiber network deployments.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experienced in mentoring and training junior technicians, providing guidance on technical procedures, safety protocols, and customer service skills to foster a skilled and knowledgeable team.
- Understands telecommunications regulations and standards, ensuring all installations and repairs comply with federal, state, and local codes, enhancing safety and operational compliance.
- Experienced in the setup and maintenance of complex communication systems, including VoIP and unified communications platforms. This expertise allows for seamless integration and troubleshooting of sophisticated voice and data services.
- Demonstrated ability to efficiently schedule and prioritize tasks, manage work orders, and adhere to deadlines, ensuring optimal workflow and timely completion of projects even under pressure.
