Cytotechnologist – Job Description
Location: Grand Rapids, MI
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM (No weekends or holidays)
Overview
A Cytotechnologist is a specialized laboratory professional responsible for analyzing human cells to detect abnormalities, precancerous changes, and cancer. This role plays a vital part in early disease detection and ensuring accurate patient diagnosis.
Key Responsibilities
- Examine Pap smears, body fluids, and FNA samples microscopically to identify abnormal cells.
- Screen cytology slides for cancer, precancerous changes, infections, and inflammatory conditions.
- Prepare, stain, and process cytology samples using ThinPrep, SurePath, and conventional methods.
- Collaborate with pathologists to review suspicious or high-risk findings.
- Document results thoroughly in the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
- Maintain high accuracy and follow CLIA, CAP, and OSHA guidelines.
- Participate in quality control, proficiency testing, and continuing education.
- Operate and maintain cytology lab equipment and instruments.
- Support process improvements and ensure compliance with safety protocols.
Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Cytotechnology or Medical Laboratory Science (or related field).
- ASCP Cytotechnologist (CT) certification required.
- Strong cell morphology and cytology screening knowledge.
- Excellent visual acuity, attention to detail, and analytical thinking.
- Ability to work independently and manage daily workload efficiently.
- Experience with LIS systems and digital cytology platforms preferred.
