ORGANIZATION HISTORY AND MISSION

The MinKwon Center for Community Action's mission is to empower the Korean American community and work with the wider Asian American and immigrant communities to achieve economic and social justice for all. Since our founding in 1984, we have made a profound presence in the Korean and Asian American communities through various grassroots organizing, education, and advocacy initiatives that address important community issues, including immigration policies, civic participation, and the rights of workers and tenants. In its work, the MinKwon Center places a special emphasis on meeting the needs of the marginalized, including low-income, limited-English-proficient and undocumented residents.


Job Description

The MinKwon Center is seeking a dedicated and talented individual to serve as a Civic Participation Director. This individual will work closely with the Executive Director and other staff to oversee MinKwon's civic engagement work to empower the Asian American community through electoral organizing, education and advocacy around voting rights/reforms. The Civic Participation Director will guide MinKwon's efforts in coalition-building, strategic thinking and execution of voter engagement campaigns.


We are seeking an outgoing, action-oriented individual to play a leading role in our voter engagement work in the immigrant, Asian American and Korean American communities. This is a full-time, salaried position.


Essential duties and responsibilities include the following:

  • Developing and driving the civic engagement strategy for New York in all 3 major cycles:

1) Regular elections

2) Decennial Census

3) Redistricting through MinKwon and our APA VOICE coalition

  • Activate and expand Asian American organizations and residents to increase their capacity to improve APA voter education and mobilization rates, including coordinating and leading GOTV efforts.
  • Overseeing and providing trainings on voter engagement and outreach activities, such as door-knocking, phone banks, street outreach, mass mailings, developing materials and candidate forums for MinKwon and coalition members.
  • Supporting the fundraising and development of the program and working with the Development team to produce proposals and activity reports.
  • Preparation and situating MinKwon and APA VOICE well for the 2030 decennial Census.
  • Represent MinKwon Center in key tables, coalitions and meetings with allies and government officials, and participate on panels and other public education opportunities.
  • Supervising one or more staff in carrying out campaigns, and overseeing potential interns and volunteers.
  • Work closely with communications staff to advance and amplify MinKwon's agenda and messages.
  • Participate in organization-wide events as appropriate.


Qualifications

The ideal candidate would have the following experience and/or attributes:

  • 4+ years' experience in electoral, civic engagement or political campaigns
  • Strong understanding of voting rights, voter data, demographics and voting behavior
  • Experience managing campaigns, especially in a coalition context
  • Strong communications skills in writing and speaking, including public speaking
  • Supervision experience
  • Highly organized
  • Willingness and flexibility to work evenings and weekends
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and deadlines efficiently with minimal supervision
  • Korean proficiency is preferred
