Position Overview:

The Special Education Compliance Coordinator will serve as a cornerstone of our Special Education department, supporting compliance, programming, and staff supervision in alignment with IDEA and FAPE guidelines. The ideal candidate will possess exceptional analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills and have a deep commitment to students with exceptionalities in an alternative school setting. This position requires effective communication with parents, advocates, and attorneys while ensuring student-centered and legally compliant practices are maintained across the school.


Requirements:

Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

Leadership & Oversight:

  • Provide daily supervision and coaching for 10–15 dedicated aides, ensuring high expectations, clarity of roles, and consistent implementation of IEP supports.
  • Assign, adjust, and track dedicated aide coverage based on IEP mandates, student needs, and school-wide scheduling.
  • Serve as the liaison between instructional teams and related service providers to ensure cohesive student support.

Compliance & Program Monitoring:

  • Monitor all IEP timelines, reevaluations, and service delivery data to ensure full compliance with IDEA, OSSE, and DC charter regulations.
  • Maintain systems for progress monitoring, student data collection, and the tracking of accommodations and modifications.
  • Oversee the implementation and fidelity of IEPs and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) across instructional and support staff.

Communication & Advocacy:

  • Communicate with families, guardians, advocates, and legal representatives in a clear, compassionate, and professional manner.
  • Facilitate and participate in IEP meetings, MDTs, and manifestation determinations with preparation, documentation, and follow-through.
  • Support families in understanding their rights and collaborate with team members to foster a proactive and inclusive environment.

Documentation & Writing:

  • Draft “Prior Written Notices,” meeting summaries, and formal letters with precision and adherence to legal standards.
  • Maintain pristine records for compliance audits and internal quality assurance reviews.
  • Submit all documents, reports, and data following weekly, monthly, and quarterly deadlines.

School Culture & Team Collaboration:

  • Collaborate with general education, clinical, and operations staff to ensure full integration of students with exceptional needs.
  • Model and build capacity around a strengths-based, inclusive approach to working with students in an alternative education setting.
  • Participate in professional development, reflective practices, and leadership meetings to support school-wide growth.

Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Special Education, Educational Leadership, or a related field (preferred)
  • Bachelor’s Degree (required)
  • Valid DC Special Education License or eligibility to obtain within one year
  • At least 5 years of experience in special education, with prior leadership, coordination, or compliance roles preferred
  • Expertise in IDEA, FAPE, ADA, Section 504, and DC compliance requirements
  • Demonstrated experience supervising staff or leading collaborative teams
  • Strong writing, data analysis, and organizational skills
