Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Construction Safety Manager to oversee safety compliance on construction projects in St. Joseph County and LaPorte, Indiana. This role will initially manage safety at both locations before being based at a single site, likely in LaPorte. The Construction Safety Manager will act on behalf of the client to ensure that all contractors adhere to safety regulations and project safety standards.

Responsibilities

  • Review contractor safety plans, Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), and method statements for compliance with project requirements.
  • Monitor contractor implementation of approved safety programs.
  • Conduct regular site walkthroughs to verify safe work practices.
  • Identify unsafe conditions or behaviors and require corrective action.
  • Represent the client’s safety interests during construction activities.
  • Provide guidance to contractors regarding safety expectations and best practices.
  • Escalate unresolved safety concerns to project leadership.
  • Recommend suspension of work in cases of imminent danger.
  • Verify contractor compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure required documentation (training records, permits, certifications) is maintained.
  • Monitor high-risk activities including fall protection, energized electrical work, confined space entry, crane operations, and excavation and trenching.
  • Participate in regulatory inspections as the owner’s representative.
  • Attend and contribute to safety coordination meetings.
  • Track and report safety performance metrics to client leadership.
  • Review incident reports and corrective action plans.
  • Provide regular written safety observations and risk assessments.
  • Participate in incident investigations.
  • Ensure root cause analysis is completed by the responsible contractor.
  • Verify corrective actions are implemented effectively.
  • Issue safety observations and non-conformance notices.
  • Stop work in cases of imminent danger and require corrective action prior to resumption of work.

Essential Skills

  • 10+ years of experience in construction safety.
  • Strong leadership skills without direct authority.
  • Ability to influence contractors and drive compliance.
  • Risk identification and mitigation.
  • Professional communication and documentation skills.
  • Conflict resolution and diplomatic enforcement.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • CSP or CHST certification preferred.
  • Experience in data center and/or electrical projects highly desired.
  • 5+ years in construction safety on large commercial, industrial, mission-critical, or infrastructure projects.
  • Experience working on the owner/client side or with a major general contractor on complex, multi-trade projects.

Work Environment

The role requires full-time onsite presence at the construction sites, initially managing safety at two locations in St. Joseph County and LaPorte, Indiana. The projects are expected to last around six years, and local candidates or those willing to relocate temporarily are preferred. The work environment involves using a laptop with Revit or Bluebeam for opening and marking up PDFs.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of LaPorte, IN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $70.00 - $90.00/hr.
