Position Summary:
We are seeking a dynamic and mission-aligned Physical Education / Sports Teacher to serve students in grades PK3 through 6th. The role of the Physical Education Teacher is to design and implement a high-quality, developmentally appropriate, and inclusive physical education program that builds student wellness, fitness, teamwork, and a lifelong appreciation for healthy habits and physical activity.

The Physical Education Teacher is responsible for helping students develop strength, flexibility, coordination, sportsmanship, and knowledge of basic movement concepts and athletic skills in a safe and engaging environment. This individual will also lead our after-school sports programming, organize school-based athletic events, and collaborate with classroom Guides to ensure physical activity is meaningfully integrated into the Montessori school day.

This is a 10-month position, and the Physical Education Teacher will be a member of the Specials Team and the Academic Unit. Working hours are typically Monday-Friday, 7:45 a.m. - 4:30 pm.

Essential Functions and Accountabilities:

  • Designs and implements a comprehensive physical education program that supports the physical, social, and emotional development of all students in alignment with Montessori principles and DC physical education standards.
  • Develops lesson plans that are inclusive, engaging, and accessible to children of all abilities and backgrounds.
  • Teaches age-appropriate movement, sports skills, and wellness habits through structured classes that emphasize cooperation, teamwork, sportsmanship, and self-discipline.
  • Ensures that all students are participating in a safe, respectful, and emotionally supportive learning environment.
  • Models, teaches, and reinforces positive character values in the gymnasium and on the field, including empathy, effort, resilience, and respect for others.
  • Establishes clear routines and expectations for student behavior using developmentally appropriate classroom management techniques.
  • Maintains equipment and inventory for physical education and sports programs; requests new supplies as needed to ensure program quality.
  • Develops and organizes in-house sports tournaments, wellness events, Field Day, and after-school athletic programs to promote student engagement and community spirit.
  • Collaborates with teachers, staff, and administration to support integration of physical activity and movement throughout the school day.
  • Tracks and assesses student progress in physical development using a combination of observation, formative assessment tools, and performance benchmarks.
  • Regularly communicates with families regarding student progress and school-wide wellness initiatives.
  • Upholds student confidentiality and safety protocols at all times.
  • Attends and participates in all staff meetings, professional development sessions, family events, and other duties as assigned.
  • Represents the school in a positive and professional manner both on campus and in the larger community.
  • Performs other tasks as deemed necessary and appropriate by school leadership.

Required Competencies and Qualifications:

  • Deep knowledge of physical education best practices and child development
  • Strong instructional and class management skills across diverse age ranges
  • Ability to differentiate activities and modify curriculum for students with exceptional needs
  • Willingness to embrace and support the Montessori philosophy and culturally inclusive practices
  • Passion for promoting student health, movement, and wellness through creative and purposeful instruction
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and collaboration skills

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education, Kinesiology, Health Education, or a related field is required
  • Valid DC teaching license or eligibility to obtain one in Physical Education (K-6 or K-12)
  • Current CPR and First Aid Certification preferred
  • 2 - 4 years of experience teaching physical education in a public, public charter, or independent elementary school setting
  • Experience with after-school coaching or leading extracurricular sports programs preferred
  • Familiarity with trauma-informed, inclusive, and culturally responsive practices in a school setting
  • Montessori experience is not required but highly valued

Salary: $45,000 - 75,000
