THE ROLE
The Safety Specialist is responsible for ensuring day to day compliance for the facility. This role will take the lead when it comes to accident investigations and corrective action for the recycling facility. He or she will be a main driver to push a “safety first” culture. This individual will exercise knowledge in Cal-OSHA/OSHA when developing, coordinating and implementing occupational health policies and procedures to promote effective safety operations throughout the organization. The Safety Specialist role will be based in Lost Hills, California.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
- Maintain and enforce the IIPP of each business unit
- Ability to proactively manage potentials risks by using hazard assessments, root cause analysis, and risk mitigation techniques
- Identify opportunities to minimize workplace injuries, accidents and health problems
- Collaborate with management to develop, prepare, and implement safety policies
- Maintain safety training records for personnel
- Ensure compliance with federal, state and local safety laws, regulations, codes and rules
- Ensure completion for required OSHA and MSHA recordkeeping and reporting
- Conduct site audits at least weekly
- Prepare safety plans and procedures to satisfy company and regulatory requirements
- Review safety training and recommend revisions, improvements and updates
- Provide assistance as necessary for tailgate/safety meetings for the various business units
- Conduct daily safety observations and brief department managers of any issues
- Perform testing on noise, air flow and air quality, and also keep record of the testing
- Provide documentation and reports for daily safety inspections of the jobsite
- Review accident and incident reports for completeness and make recommendations to prevent future occurrences
- Report to various regulatory agencies as necessary
- Maintain surveillance of the Lost Hills yards to identify and prevent theft Other duties as assigned
Requirements:
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS, SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Health and Safety, Environmental Health, or related field
- BCSP certification or equivalent is preferred (CSP, ASP, SMS, OHST, etc.)
- OSHA certifications, preferably OSHA 501 or to be obtained within 1-2 years of service
- Experience with safety audit tools/software, industrial environments/heavy machinery
- Knowledge of PPE standards
- 3-5 years of experience in occupational health and safety in an industrial environment
- Ability to create and conduct safety meetings
- Proficiency in office software, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
- Knowledge of company safety policies and applicable OSHA standards
- Excellent organizational, communication, and time management skills
- Strong attention to detail, sense of urgency, and the ability to keep up with current safety practices and regulations
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND REQUIREMENTS
- This role is primarily located in an industrial environment, where you will be exposed to machinery, material handling equipment, noise, and production activities. Appropriate personal protective equipment will be provided
- Ability to walk/stand for extended periods and occasionally lift up to 25 lbs

Pay: $75,000-85,000
