Environmental Health and Safety Specialist

The Environmental Health and Safety Specialist (EHSS) is responsible for supporting the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the Environmental, Health, and Safety programs in a pharmaceutical manufacturing environment. This role ensures compliance with OSHA, EPA, FDA, DEA, and other applicable regulatory requirements while fostering a strong safety culture. The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist partners with Human Resources, Project Managers, Operations Supervisors, Maintenance Supervisors, Engineering and Quality to minimize risks, promote employee well-being, and maintain a safe and compliant workplace. The EHS Specialists will provide subject matter expertise either through education, training, and/or experience in multiple areas including environmental management, compliance, occupational safety, risk management, and/or occupational health.

Essential Functions:

This description is intended to be illustrative of the major duties performed by the employee assigned to this position.

Health and Safety Functions:

  • Conducts SOP risk assessments, program risk assessments, ergonomic evaluations and job hazard analyses (JHAs).
  • Supports industrial hygiene programs including monitoring of airborne particulates, hazardous drug handling, and potential noise exposure.
  • Assists in the development and delivery of EHS training programs.
  • Maintains health and safety records and promotes open reporting of safety incidents.
  • Supports incident investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective actions.
  • Leads the Safety Committee meetings
  • Recognizes areas for improvement and makes recommendations to the Safety Committee and Function EHS Manager with sound proposals

Environmental Compliance Functions:

  • Supports environmental compliance programs including hazardous waste management (RCRA), Tier II reporting, air permits, storm water reporting, wastewater discharge permits, and recycling initiatives.
  • Maintains Safety Data Sheets and records for chemical inventory management.
  • Responsible for hazardous waste and controlled substance waste segregation, labeling, and disposal activities in compliance with EPA and DOT regulations.
  • Assist with environmental reporting and sustainability initiatives.

Regulatory and Compliance Functions:

  • Supports regulatory inspections and audits (OSHA, EPA, CDPHE, Fire Departments).
  • Responsible for ensuring OSHA compliance for the organization.
  • Conducts internal audits, safety inspections, and Gemba Walks.
  • Ensures documentation and records are maintained in accordance with cGMP, ISO, and corporate EHS standards.
  • Partners with Quality and Compliance to ensure alignment of EHS programs with cGMPs.

Emergency Preparedness and Response Functions:

  • Participates in emergency response planning, including spill response, fire drills, and evacuation procedures.
  • Recognized as First Responder for the facility in emergency situations.
  • Supports Business Continuity and site risk management programs.

General Functions:

  • Coordination of daily EHS functions and support activities, and track information including but not limited employee unsafe conditions, near misses, incidents, and accidents.
  • Responsible for ensuring that all work is conducted in a safe and healthy manner in accordance with all laws and regulations.
  • Works independently and collaboratively with the Senior Leadership Team, Managers, Supervisors and Leads across all departments.
  • Provides guidance, support and supervision to personnel assigned to support the projects
  • Maintains relationships with internal clients (e.g., engineering, operations, and contracts) and customer and contractor/subcontractor representatives to coordinate the administration and implementation of EHS functions on projects and facilities
  • Maintains contact with project EHS personnel to keep them informed of EHS issues and to ensure adequate technical support. Provide guidance, support and supervision to personnel as needed.
  • Develops and consolidates EHS weekly and monthly KPIs for distribution and periodic review
  • Track’s deliverables, action items and corrective/preventative actions across the project
  • Develops spreadsheets, workbooks, presentations, communications and EHS informational based literature
  • Collaborates with all employees, encouraging safety suggestions to support continuous improvement
  • Supports EHS Function with launching and promoting EHS initiatives and campaigns
  • Other duties as assigned.

Experience and Necessary Competencies:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Health, Safety Engineering, Occupational Health, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, Biology, Chemistry, or equivalent
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in an Environmental Safety and Health position, preferably in pharmaceutical, biotech, chemical manufacturing.
  • Associate Safety Professional (ASP) certification preferred.
  • Valid driver license required
  • Strong knowledge of safety management systems and regulatory compliance.
  • Ability to conduct risk assessments, incident investigations, and develop corrective actions.
  • Effective communication and training skills.
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in cross-functional teams.
  • Strong working knowledge of OSHA, EPA, DOT, NFPA, and FDA/DEA regulations required.
  • Thorough understanding of federal and state policies and regulations required
  • Understanding of 503B regulatory requirements, cGMP standards, and USP guidelines is a plus!
  • Proficient written, verbal and oral English communication skills are required.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 tools including Outlook, Microsoft, and Excel.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand or sit for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to lift, push and pull up to 50 pounds periodically.
  • Ability to maintain a gowning qualification, if applicable.
  • Ability to wear company-provided PPE when required.
