The position is located at Kensington, MD headquarters. The role is hybrid, in office Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
Position Description
The Accounting Manager will plan and direct the accounting activities of the department. The position reports to the VP Controller.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Supervise, coach, and develop accounting staff while fostering a culture of accountability
- Oversee and participate in the month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes, including the preparation, review, and approval of journal entries, accruals, and general ledger reconciliations
- Recruit and hire accounting staff and conduct performance evaluations
- Partner with the VP Controller in the preparation of annual budgets, forecasts, strategic initiatives, and financial analyses.
- Assist in the implementation of new products, services, accounting processes, and system enhancements, including establishing and maintaining related general ledger structures.
Position Responsibilities
- Effectively and efficiently manage the accounting department daily flow
- Prepare required financial reports in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and NCUA regulatory guidance
- Assist in the preparation of activity reports, annual budget, and forecasts
- Implement and improve financial and internal controls to ensure accurate accounting of credit union assets
- Manage and reconcile fixed assets, prepaid expenses, borrowings, participation loans, corporate accounts, settlement accounts, and other balance sheet accounts.
- Assist in implementing new projects and strategies to meet overall objectives of department and credit union
- Assist auditors and examiners, providing information and documents needed for inquiries
- Participate and collaborate with other departments on credit union initiatives
- Ensure department follows policies and procedures and attends all required training such as the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA)
- Coordinate and prepare the quarterly NCUA Call Report, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance with regulatory reporting requirements.
Position Requirements
- Ability to communicate to serve the unique needs of different audiences across departments
- Actively seek ways to grow and be challenged using both formal or informal development channels; Accept assignments to broaden capabilities and learn from experience
- Proven ability to manipulate and analyze financial data using various techniques and tools
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite or similar software
- Ensure compliance with all applicable accounting standards, regulations, internal policies, and required training programs, including BSA compliance.
- Ensure strict confidentiality of sensitive financial, employee, and member information.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance
- Five to seven years of experience and at least two years managing and developing staff
- Proven ability to manipulate and analyze financial data
- Certified Public Accountant designation preferred, but not required
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift to 15 pounds at times.
