Job Description

Certified Nurse Midwife (Home Birth Practice)

Location: Community-based – Home Births, Client Residences, Midwifery Office
Employment Type: Part-time
Reports to: Practice Owner / Lead Midwife

Position Overview:

We are seeking a compassionate, experienced, and autonomous Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) to join our home birth midwifery practice. The ideal candidate embraces physiologic birth, holistic care, and family-centered support. As a CNM in this role, you will provide comprehensive midwifery care to low-risk clients in a community setting—offering prenatal, intrapartum, postpartum, and newborn care in the comfort of clients’ homes and practice office.

This role requires excellent clinical judgment, comfort with autonomous practice, and a deep respect for informed choice and cultural humility.

Key Responsibilities:

Antenatal Care:

  • Conduct thorough prenatal assessments, including histories, physical exams, lab work, and client education.
  • Monitor maternal and fetal health throughout pregnancy.
  • Build trusting relationships with clients and their families.
  • Support preparation for home birth, including risk screening and emergency planning.

Intrapartum Care (Home Birth Attendance):

  • Provide full-scope midwifery care during labor and delivery in home environments.
  • Utilize intermittent auscultation, maternal assessments, and low-intervention approaches.
  • Manage normal labor and birth, including immediate postpartum and neonatal care.
  • Stabilize and initiate transfer in rare cases of emergency or complications.

Postpartum & Newborn Care:

  • Provide postpartum care through in-home visits during the first 6 weeks after birth.
  • Monitor maternal recovery, mental health, and lactation.
  • Perform newborn exams, screen for jaundice, weight gain, and feeding issues.
  • Educate and empower families on newborn care and early parenting.

Administrative & Collaborative Duties:

  • Maintain timely, accurate clinical documentation and charting.
  • Participate in regular peer review, chart audits, and continuing education.
  • Coordinate with consulting physicians, EMS, lactation specialists, and community resources.
  • Participate in practice on-call rotation.

Qualifications:

  • Active Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) certification through AMCB (or equivalent).
  • Unrestricted RN and APRN licenses in the practicing state.
  • Current certifications in CPR, Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP), and BLS.
  • Minimum of 1–2 years experience in midwifery, preferably with home or birth center experience.
  • Experience or comfort attending births without direct OB backup onsite.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation for home visits.

Preferred Attributes:

  • Strong commitment to midwifery model of care and physiologic birth.
  • Cultural humility and experience working with diverse populations.
  • Excellent communication and counseling skills.
  • Ability to remain calm in unpredictable, non-clinical environments.
  • Experience supporting VBAC, water birth, or out-of-hospital birth is a plus.
