Position Summary
We are seeking a skilled and reliable Equipment Operator to support residential construction by performing excavation, backfilling, and installation of underground utility services. This role is critical to maintaining production schedules while ensuring all work is completed safely, efficiently, and to company and code standards.
Key Responsibilities
Excavation & Site Work
· Operate equipment such as mini excavators, skid steers, and trenchers
· Dig trenches for: Electrical services
· Maintain proper trench depth, width, and grade per plans and code
Service Installation Support
· Assist crews with layout and installation of:
o Conduit systems
o Meter/service runs
o Underground utilities
o Pull service cables form meters to panels through conduit
· Understand basic utility routing and clearances
· Work closely with electricians, plumbers, and superintendents
Backfilling & Site Restoration
· Properly backfill trenches using suitable material
· Compact soil to prevent settling
· Restore grade and prep for inspections or next phase of construction
Safety & Compliance
· Follow all OSHA and company safety standards
· Identify and avoid existing underground utilities (811 awareness)
· Maintain safe trenching practices (slope, depth awareness, etc.)
· Perform daily equipment inspections
Equipment Care
· Operate equipment safely and efficiently
· Perform routine maintenance checks (fluids, grease, wear items)
· Report mechanical issues promptly
Qualifications
Required
· Experience operating:
o Mini excavator
o Skid steer
· Knowledge of trenching and backfilling practices
· Ability to read site plans and layouts (basic level)
· Strong attention to safety and detail
· Valid driver’s license
· Already have a DOT certification or the ability to get one prior to starting
Preferred
· Experience in residential utility/service installation
· Familiarity with electrical, plumbing, or gas services
· Understanding of local codes and inspections
· Ability to operate multiple types of equipment
Physical Requirements
· Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
· Lift up to 50 lbs as needed
· Climb in/out of equipment frequently
· Stand, walk, and work on uneven terrain
