Job Summary
The primary purpose of the Shelter Advocate is to conduct shelter intakes for new clients and to provide direct services to shelter guests. The Shelter advocate will also provide direct services to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and other serious crimes. This position is based in Wilkes-Barre, PA.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts shelter intakes for new clients.
  • Schedules counseling appointments as needed.
  • Provides comprehensive services to shelter clients, including case management.
  • Assists shelter guests in finding permanent safe and affordable housing.
  • Assists shelter guests with the Economic Justice program
  • Provides crisis counseling and intervention, advocacy and accompaniment, and individual and group counseling to adult and child victims of sexual assault/incest and/or domestic violence
  • Accompanies clients through civil and criminal justice system.
  • Accompanies clients to hospital when necessary.
  • Provides hotline coverage in cooperation with other staff.
  • Provides weekly (ADL) Activities of Daily Living Skills lessons.


Qualifications

  • Preferred degree in human services field and/or at least two years related experience. Must be self-assured, assertive and confident in working with diverse groups. Must be sensitive to domestic violence, sexual abuse, women’s issues and other serious crimes, as well as possess experience in crisis intervention.
  • Good community networking skills, public speaking skills and written and oral communication skills required. Demonstrates sound ethical practices.
  • Ability to work variable hours on a daily basis which may also include occasional weekend on-call availability.
  • Must possess the ability to work independently and participate with a work collective.
  • Familiarity with personal computers to include word processing and databases is preferred.
  • Must demonstrate a commitment to the principles of empowerment, self-determination and diversity as per VRC mission and philosophy.
  • Must successfully complete training and certification as Sexual Assault Counselor and Domestic Violence Counselor/Advocate.
  • Ability to travel is required. Must possess a valid driver’s license, access to an automobile to perform program duties and automobile insurance as required by law
