Internship Summary:

Reports to: Director of Visitor Experience & Group Tour

As the Sports and Visitor Experience intern, you will directly support the Tourism, Sports, and Visitor Experience department by developing the promotional and logistical tools needed to attract major sporting events and group travelers to Washington, D.C. You will gain dedicated experience in sports marketing, international tourism promotion, and high-level event coordination.

This internship provides a unique opportunity to learn about the sports and travel trade industry, gain practical experience in CRM management, and contribute to the success of Destination DC's specialized tourism initiatives.

Your Duties/Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Update department quarterly newsletter content.
  • Assist with event brainstorming and logistics.
  • Assist with international marketing promotion collateral needs.
  • Assist the department with social media efforts related to group tours and sports in D.C.
  • Assist the department with relevant website edits.
  • Assist the department with special event/site visit/familiarization tour itineraries and logistics.
  • Support sales managers with planning for appropriate sports events & travel trade shows.
  • Assist with the management of the sports calendar.
  • Support sports and events bid proposals.
  • Assist with Visitor Experience inquiries, brochure orders, and distribution.
  • Assist in the management of Simpleview, the company's CRM system.
  • Attend weekly meetings with the sports and visitor experience department; attend bi-weekly meetings with the entire tourism, sports, and visitor experience team.
  • Additional projects as assigned.

What You Bring: Education, Experience & Competencies:

  • You must be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university; you must be a junior or senior in good standing.
  • Hospitality, Travel & Tourism, Marketing, Sports Management, and Event Planning majors are strongly preferred.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and Canva, with the ability to quickly learn new tools like Wrike, Simpleview, and CapCut.
  • Solid organizational skills and attention to detail, including the ability to manage project statuses and suggest creative solutions to problems.
  • A positive, punctual, and eager-to-learn attitude with a demonstrated passion for the travel and tourism industry in Washington, DC.
  • Social media experience is a plus.
  • Previous internship experience is a plus.

Accountabilities & Measures

Weekly status reports are required of all team members. Performance evaluation will be conducted at the end of the internship.

Internship Specifics:

Duration

  • Summer: start week of May 18 - ending week of August 3 ( 12 weeks).
  • You must be available to work a minimum of 25 hours and no more than 30 hours per week.
  • A typical summer work schedule is Monday through Thursday, 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, with Fridays off.
  • Hours worked must be within the parameters of Monday-Friday, 8:30am-5:00pm EST to coincide with the operational hours of the office.

Work Environment:

This Intern will follow Destination DC's policies for staff and may work hybrid, coming into the office at a minimum of three days a week, as determined by supervisor. Intern may work from the office on other days, too. Intern must have reliable internet to work remotely.
