Job Summary:
The Occupational Safety and Health Specialist is a key position responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining safety and health programs across a diverse and geographically dispersed workforce within the Executive Office for United States Attorneys (EOUSA) and United States Attorneys’ Offices (USAOs). This role ensures compliance with OSHA and other U.S. Government safety regulations, conducts facility inspections, investigates workplace incidents, and provides training to promote a safe and healthy work environment. ​ The specialist collaborates with leadership to draft policies, manage records of work-related injuries, and participate in special projects to enhance overall safety standards. This position requires strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills, along with expertise in safety regulations and hazard mitigation.
Responsibilities/Duties:

  1. Safety and Health Surveys and Inspections: ​
    • Conduct surveys and inspections of EOUSA and USAO facilities to ensure compliance with accepted standards for safeguarding life and health. ​
    • Draft detailed evaluations and recommendations based on survey results for review and revision. ​
  2. Policy Development: ​
    • Assist in developing agency-wide policy standards addressing the safeguarding of life and health within DOJ facilities. ​
    • Present drafted documentation to the EOUSA Safety Officer (Assistant Director, SEMS) for review and revise as per guidance. ​
  3. Incident and Injury Management: ​
    • Participate in inquiries on job-related injuries, accidents, or reports of unsafe working conditions. ​
    • Serve as the Office of Record Keeping for all work-related injuries and illnesses for EOUSA and USAOs. ​
    • Process approximately 1,200 phone inquiries, 600 email inquiries, and 95 reportable injuries annually. ​
  4. Training and Education: ​
    • Conduct briefings, training classes, and presentations on Occupational Safety and Health topics. ​
    • Coordinate periodic Occupational Safety and Health Conferences at DOJ training facilities. ​
  5. Special Projects:
    • Participate in special projects and studies affecting the overall safety and health of personnel in DOJ facilities and property. ​

Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills. ​
  • Ability to analyze and document safety conditions and recommend corrective actions. ​
  • Proficiency in conducting facility inspections and drafting reports. ​
  • Knowledge of OSHA standards and other relevant safety regulations.

Qualifications:

  • Expertise in developing and implementing safety and health programs for a diverse and geographically dispersed workforce.
  • Knowledge of OSHA and other U.S. Government safety regulations.
  • Proficiency in facility inspections, hazardous condition identification, and corrective methods.

Education/Certifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree with 4 years of experience OR 10 years of relevant experience without a degree
