Job Description

  • The Marine Electrician Superintendent leads a team of supervisors and technicians to deliver high-quality, efficient, and reliable shipboard electrical repairs and installations. This role oversees day-to-day operations within the department, ensures strict adherence to technical standards and process control procedures, and serves as a subject matter expert on marine electrical systems. The superintendent provides clear status updates to customers, manages budgets and resources, and drives continuous improvement in repair capability, safety, and quality.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and manage assigned personnel, including two or more supervisors, to enhance repair reliability, capability, and efficiency within the department.
  • Provide day-to-day leadership, training, and mentoring to develop technical skills and ensure consistent, high-quality workmanship.
  • Attend production and progress meetings with customers and internal stakeholders, delivering accurate, up-to-date work status in a clear and concise manner.
  • Track and manage budgetary impacts, including labor allocation, material stock ordering, and overall resource utilization for assigned projects.
  • Schedule and/or serve as the departmental representative during required quality assurance checkpoints to ensure compliance with specifications and standards.
  • Accurately write Condition Found Reports that detail inspection and test results, identified discrepancies, and recommendations to restore systems or components to proper operating condition.
  • Read, interpret, and comprehend work specifications, technical manuals, standards, schematics, and drawings to plan and execute work correctly.
  • Complete required reporting processes, including schedule updates and Test and Inspection Plan (T.I.P.) updates, in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Interpret and perform work in accordance with designated Process Control Procedures (PCPs), ensuring all tasks meet required process and quality standards.
  • Conduct interviews, performance reviews, and disciplinary actions for assigned personnel in line with established company guidelines and policies.
  • Act as a subject matter expert on trade-specific repairs for shipboard systems, providing technical guidance and direction to supervisors and technicians.
  • Perform and oversee expert-level troubleshooting of shipboard electrical systems and equipment to verify proper operation and identify root causes of issues.
  • Ensure electrical troubleshooting, installation, and repair work is executed safely and in compliance with applicable standards and procedures.
  • Review and verify the accuracy of blueprints, drawings, sketches, and technical manuals used for electrical repairs and installations.
  • Coordinate with other trades and departments to support integrated shipboard repair and maintenance activities.
  • Promote adherence to safety regulations and best practices, including those related to NAVSEA Standard Items and OSHA standards.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives by identifying process enhancements, training needs, and best practices within the department.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support operational and customer requirements.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum 10 years of experience in the marine and/or shipyard industry.
  • Expert-level knowledge of trade-specific repair procedures for shipboard electrical systems and components.
  • Demonstrated experience in management roles, including leading teams and resolving conflicts.
  • Strong familiarity with NAVSEA Standard Items and OSHA standards applicable to shipboard and shipyard work.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, schematics, sketches, and technical manuals with expert-level proficiency.
  • Proven capability in electrical troubleshooting, including diagnosing and resolving complex issues in shipboard systems and equipment.
  • Hands-on experience with electrical installation and repair in a marine or shipyard environment.
  • Ability to accurately write detailed Condition Found Reports, including inspection results, discrepancies, and repair recommendations.
  • Proficiency in reading and comprehending work specifications, technical manuals, and standards.
  • Experience tracking budgets, managing material stock, and allocating personnel to meet project and departmental goals.
  • General computer literacy with proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong communication skills to provide clear, concise updates in meetings and written reports.
  • Ability to interpret and perform work in accordance with Process Control Procedures (PCPs).
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct interviews, performance reviews, and disciplinary actions in accordance with company guidance.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience supervising multiple supervisors and larger trade teams in a shipyard or marine repair environment.
  • Proficiency in electrical troubleshooting, installation, and repairs specifically within marine or shipboard contexts.
  • Experience as an electrician mate or similar role in marine electrical systems.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple projects, QA checkpoints, and reporting requirements simultaneously.
  • Ability to participate in and contribute to production and progress meetings with customers and internal teams.
  • Experience working with Test and Inspection Plans (T.I.P.) and related documentation.
  • Comfort working in fast-paced, schedule-driven shipyard environments with changing priorities.
  • Commitment to safety, quality, and adherence to established procedures and standards.

Work Environment

  • Work takes place in major shipyards, including locations such as NASSCO, BAE, CMSD, and NBSD, within active marine and shipyard environments. The role operates primarily on a first shift schedule from 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with the expectation of flexibility for overtime from Monday through Saturday as needed, including potential 10-hour workdays. The environment involves working around shipboard systems, rotating machinery, pumps, electric motors and generators, diesel engines, governors and controls, hydraulics, welding, and valve repair activities. Employees may be required to wear uniforms provided by the company and use appropriate personal protective equipment, including safety boots and prescription safety glasses where needed. The setting is hands-on, field- and shop-based, with a focus on safe operations, adherence to technical standards, and collaboration with experienced technicians and skilled tradespeople across multiple facilities.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of San Diego, CA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $50.00 - $60.00/hr.
