Public Sewer Service has been serving New Jersey for more than five decades and generates over $100 million in annual revenue. Based in West Caldwell, NJ, we operate a large sewer cleaning division with a fleet of Jet/Vac (Vactor-style) trucks, jetters, and CCTV sewer inspection equipment, supported by an experienced team of sewer and drain professionals across multiple specialties. We serve residential, commercial, industrial, and municipal customers throughout New Jersey and surrounding area's.
Position Description
We’re hiring an Operations/Service Manager to run day-to-day field operations—dispatching crews and equipment, managing workflow, ensuring safety/compliance, and delivering high-quality service across our core lines of business (Commercial Sewer Cleaning, Jet/Vac, CCTV, pump/pit maintenance, grease disposal service, sewer repair excavation). This role is ideal for a hands-on leader who can manage people, schedules, trucks, and customer expectations in a fast-paced, emergency-response environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the day-to-day operations of the Commercial Sewer Cleaning Division, ensuring crews, equipment, and schedules are aligned to meet customer commitments and profitability goals.
- Plan and control daily/weekly scheduling and dispatch, including emergency/on-call coverage in a 24/7 service environment.
- Directly supervise field leadership and crews (foremen, operators, techs, drivers): coaching, performance management, training coordination, and accountability.
- Serve as the primary office-based point of control for job planning, routing, work order flow, and real-time coordination with the field.
- Oversee customer communication and service execution, including handling escalations and ensuring professional, timely resolution.
- Review and approve job scopes, proposals/work orders, and field documentation, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and on-time deliverables—especially CCTV reports.
- Track operational KPIs (productivity, labor utilization, job costing, margins) and adjust staffing/equipment deployment to remove bottlenecks.
- Ensure safety and compliance across all operations (OSHA practices, traffic control, confined space protocols as applicable); support incident reporting and corrective actions.
- Coordinate fleet and equipment readiness: preventative maintenance, repairs, inspections, vendor coordination, and uptime planning.
- Lead operations across key service lines, including:
- Jet/Vac jetting & vacuum services (sanitary/storm, catch basins, grease/sand/silt removal, obstruction removal, etc.)
- CCTV/TV inspections and pipe locating (2”–72” lines; reporting/deliverables)
- Grease trap maintenance and pumping programs
- Sewage pump and pit cleaning/repairs/installations
- Partner with ownership/management on staffing plans, service capacity, process improvements, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years in sewer/drain/underground utility operations with at least 2–3 years in a supervisory/lead role (or equivalent operations management experience).
- Working knowledge of Jet/Vac operations and/or CCTV inspection workflows.
- Familiarity with producing or reviewing CCTV inspection reports and documenting findings.
- Strong scheduling/dispatching skills and ability to manage multiple crews and emergency calls.
- Solid communication skills with customers, vendors, and field teams.
- Valid driver’s license (CDL a plus—especially for vacuum/jetting environments).
- OSHA training/certifications; confined space/traffic control experience.
