Land Surveyor-in-Training (LSIT)

ABOUT THE ROLE
SB&O is looking for a motivated and detail-oriented Land Surveyor-in-Training (LSIT) to join our growing land surveying team. This is a full-time, career-track position offering the opportunity to work alongside licensed land surveyors, party chiefs, and civil engineers on a wide range of public and private projects throughout Southern California.
The LSIT will assist with both field and office tasks, gaining hands-on experience in boundary analysis, legal descriptions, topographic mapping, construction staking, ALTA/NSPS land title surveys, and subdivision mapping. You’ll play a critical role in supporting project delivery while preparing for future professional licensure.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist in the preparation of survey deliverables including:
- Boundary and lot surveys
- Topographic and design surveys
- ALTA/NSPS Land Title Surveys
- Construction staking calculations and layouts
- Subdivision maps (Tentative, Parcel, Final)
- Legal descriptions and easement exhibits
- Record of Survey and Corner Records
- Perform calculations and data analysis under supervision of licensed PLS staff
- Review deeds, maps, and title documents for boundary and easement research
- Process field data and prepare base maps using AutoCAD Civil 3D.
- Collaborate with field crews and support field-to-finish workflows
- Ensure accuracy and adherence to SB&O and industry standards
- Maintain detailed project documentation and assist with QA/QC processes
QUALIFICATIONS
- Degree in Surveying, Civil Engineering, Geomatics, or related field (preferred)
- California LSIT certification (or ability to obtain within 12 months)
- 5 years of relevant experience in land surveying (internships or entry-level roles acceptable)
- Working knowledge of:
- Surveying principles and techniques
- AutoCAD Civil 3D, Carlson Field Software or similar platforms
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn
- Valid California driver's license and ability to travel to local field sites
