Position Summary
The Nursing Assistant (NA) acts as a caregiver for residents during their scheduled shifts in long-term care settings. This role involves delivering resident-focused nursing care and assisting with daily living activities under the guidance of a registered nurse (RN). The NA is responsible for understanding and providing age-appropriate care that addresses both the physical and emotional needs of residents as outlined in their care plans.
As a vital member of the nursing team, the NA is expected to adhere to infection prevention protocols and the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Responsibilities include:
- Assisting with basic health care needs such as bathing, grooming, dressing, and toileting.
- Recording vital signs and providing psychosocial support.
- Helping residents with mobility, including transferring and repositioning using appropriate techniques.
- Facilitating a positive dining experience by assisting with meals and snacks.
- Documenting resident interactions and care outcomes.
- Communicating any changes in residents' conditions to the charge nurse.
- Collecting non-invasive body fluid specimens.
- Maintaining cleanliness in living areas through housekeeping and laundry services.
- Encouraging participation in wellness and recreational programs.
- Engaging in departmental committees and task forces as needed.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED preferred, but not mandatory.
- Minimum age of 16 years. Previous experience in long-term care is advantageous.
- Must obtain Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification from the State Board of Nursing or be enrolled in a training program to achieve certification within four months of starting the position.
- Completion of annual competency testing and maintenance of continuing education credits, with a minimum of 12 hours required each year.
- For applicable states, registration with the Unlicensed Assistive Person (UAP) Registry is required.
- Depending on facility needs, this role may require a valid driver’s license and a motor vehicle report.
