Job Description

About the Role:

The Underground Driller plays a critical role in the construction and mining industries by operating drilling equipment to create tunnels, shafts, and boreholes beneath the earth's surface. This position requires precision and technical expertise to ensure that drilling operations are conducted safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project specifications. The Underground Driller collaborates closely with engineering teams and site supervisors to interpret blueprints and geological data, adapting drilling techniques to varying underground conditions. The role demands a strong commitment to safety protocols to protect both personnel and equipment in challenging subterranean environments. Ultimately, the Underground Driller contributes to the successful completion of underground projects that support infrastructure development and resource extraction.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Proven experience operating underground drilling equipment in construction, mining, or related industries.
  • Basic understanding of geological formations and drilling techniques.
  • Familiarity with safety regulations and protocols relevant to underground work environments.
  • Physical ability to work in confined spaces and perform manual labor under challenging conditions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certification in heavy machinery operation or underground drilling.
  • Experience with computerized drilling control systems.
  • Training in first aid and emergency response specific to underground settings.
  • Knowledge of environmental regulations related to drilling activities.
  • Previous experience working on large-scale infrastructure or mining projects.

Responsibilities:

  • Operate and maintain underground drilling machinery and equipment to create tunnels, shafts, and boreholes as per project requirements.
  • Interpret technical drawings, geological reports, and drilling plans to execute precise drilling operations.
  • Monitor drilling progress and adjust techniques to accommodate changing underground conditions and ensure structural integrity.
  • Conduct routine inspections and maintenance of drilling equipment to prevent malfunctions and ensure operational safety.
  • Collaborate with site engineers, safety officers, and other team members to adhere to safety standards and project timelines.
  • Document drilling activities, including depth measurements, equipment performance, and any incidents or anomalies encountered.
  • Respond promptly to any equipment failures or safety hazards, implementing corrective actions as necessary.

Skills:

The Underground Driller utilizes technical skills daily to operate complex drilling machinery with precision, ensuring that boreholes and tunnels meet exact specifications. Strong problem-solving abilities are essential to adapt drilling methods in response to varying geological conditions and equipment performance. Effective communication skills facilitate coordination with engineers and safety personnel to maintain a safe and productive work environment. Attention to detail is critical when monitoring equipment and documenting drilling progress to prevent errors and ensure compliance with safety standards. Additionally, mechanical aptitude supports routine maintenance and troubleshooting of drilling equipment, minimizing downtime and enhancing operational efficiency.
