Job DescriptionSalary:
The St. Johns Ministries team has an opening for a Human Resources Manager. The number of people experiencing homelessness or housing instability has risen and we are looking for a person that is mission-driven to help coordinate daily operations by supporting our employees.
Position Overview:
The Human Resources Manager plays a key role in supporting the mission of our non-profit organization by overseeing all aspects of HR operations. This includes recruitment, employee relations, performance management, compliance, and being a backup for payroll processing. The ideal candidate is experienced in building a positive workplace culture that aligns with our values.
Key Responsibilities:
Recruitment & Onboarding
- Develop and implement recruitment strategies to attract diverse and qualified candidates.
- Manage the full cycle hiring process including job postings, interviews, and onboarding.
- Collaborate with department heads to identify staffing needs and workforce planning.
Employee Relations & Engagement
- Foster a supportive and inclusive work environment.
- Address employee concerns and mediate workplace conflicts.
- Develop initiatives to improve employee engagement, retention, and morale.
HR Operations & Compliance
- Maintain accurate employee records and HR documentation.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws.
- Administer compensation, benefits, and leave programs.
Payroll Administration (backup to Controller)
- Process bi-weekly payroll accurately and on schedule.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll regulations.
- Maintain payroll records and coordinate with the Controller for reporting and reconciliation.
Training & Development
- Coordinate staff training and professional development opportunities.
- Support leadership development and succession planning.
- Promote a culture of continuous learning and growth.
Executive Support
- Provide administrative and operational support to the Executive Director.
- Assist with special projects, communications, scheduling, and other tasks as requested to help advance organizational goals.

Education and Experience:
- Bachelors degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field.
- 5+ years of HR experience, preferably in a non-profit or mission-driven organization.
- Strong knowledge of employment laws and HR best practices.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Experience with HRIS systems and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Proficiency with payroll processing and HRIS systems (BambooHR preferred)
- Knowledge of employment-related laws and regulations.

- Excellent interpersonal, negotiation and conflict resolution skills
- Ability to prioritize responsibilities and make appropriate decisions with minimal supervision
- Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality
- Ability to establish and maintain professional boundaries with guests, volunteers, and co-workers
- Comfortable around those with issues such as mental health, substance abuse, trauma, low-income and/or homeless populations, and/or healthcare preferred.
Working Conditions:
- Hybrid or on-site work depending on organizational needs.
- Occasional evening or weekend hours for events or urgent matters.
- Operate in a professional office environment using standard office equipment.
- Follow safety protocols, including the use of PPE, to minimize health risks.
- Cleaning supplies are utilized to help prevent the spread of cold and flu viruses, ensuring a healthier environment for everyone.
Physical Demands:
- Prolonged periods at a desk and working on a computer.
- Ability to lift
up to 15 pounds occasionally (e.g. office supplies, small packages).
- Occasional standing, walking, bending, or reaching within the office environment.
