Position Overview:
The Mental Health Clinician will provide comprehensive, client-centered behavioral health services to single adults residing in a shelter setting who are experiencing mental health challenges and substance use disorders. This role focuses on stabilization, harm reduction, and recovery-oriented support, with the goal of helping clients improve their mental health, maintain sobriety or reduce harm, and work toward permanent housing and community integration.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct intake assessments, psychosocial evaluations, and substance use screenings for new clients.

  • Develop individualized treatment plans in collaboration with clients, incorporating both mental health and substance use goals.

  • Provide ongoing individual counseling, crisis intervention, and psychoeducation, using evidence-based practices.

  • Facilitate therapeutic and skill-building groups on topics such as relapse prevention, coping skills, life skills, and mental wellness.

  • Coordinate care with case managers, shelter staff, medical providers, and outside treatment programs to ensure comprehensive support.

  • Utilize harm reduction principles while supporting clients in recovery and promoting safer use strategies where appropriate.

  • Maintain accurate, timely clinical documentation in compliance with agency, city, and state regulations.

  • Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings, case conferences, and trainings to ensure quality service delivery.

  • Advocate for clients’ needs and assist with referrals to higher levels of care, outpatient programs, detox, or residential treatment as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, or a related field (LMSW, LCSW, LMHC, or equivalent licensure preferred).

  • Minimum 2 years of experience working with individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders, preferably in a shelter or similar setting.

  • Knowledge of harm reduction, motivational interviewing, trauma-informed care, and recovery-oriented practices.

  • Strong crisis intervention, engagement, and de-escalation skills.

  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.

  • Excellent communication, organizational, and documentation skills.

Work Environment:

  • Shelter-based setting serving single adult clients with diverse backgrounds.

  • May require occasional evening or weekend coverage.

  • Position involves working with individuals in crisis or experiencing unstable circumstances.
