An affiliate of Horizons National, Horizons Savannah is a public/private partnership offering a summer program that addresses the achievement and opportunity gaps of under-resourced students in the Savannah area throughout their school careers from K-12. The heart of Horizons is an exemplary summer academic program that supports a cohort of students in reading, writing, math, and science, paired with swimming lessons, field trips, sports, and enrichment activities in the performing and visual arts. The program also includes a year-round component featuring family events, and enrichment activities. Position Overview:
Horizons is seeking a dedicated and effective youth development professional with a dynamic
talent for creating and nurturing a lifelong love of learning in youth. The Horizons Dean of
Students/SEL Coordinator will be responsible for performing his/her duties, including assisting
in creating a positive learning environment for all students. Horizons Dean of Students/SEL
Coordinator will help students resolve problems that interfere with their gaining the greatest
benefit from the program's educational opportunities.
Essential Job Functions:
The Dean of Students/SEL Coordinator will
● Assist in creating a positive environment conducive to teaching and learning.
● Serve as a resource to faculty and the Site Supervisors in dealing with classroom
management issues and student discipline.
● Develop and implement SEL programming to all sites and grade levels on a regular
basis.
● Assess and tailor SEL programs to meet the needs of the student population.
● Assist the Site Supervisors with the responsibility for protecting the health and welfare
of students.
● Assist in developing and implementing behavior expectations, plans and interventions
for students. Utilize trauma informed practices for student behavior support.
● Communicate effectively and openly with parents, and encourage parents to feel that
they are valued part of our Horizons community. Support the Site Supervisors in the
development and implementation of parent involvement activities and communication
to parents such as the weekly newsletter.
● Perform other related duties as assigned, during the contracted work day.
Qualifications:
In addition to a strong commitment to Horizon's mission, this position requires a balance of
knowledge of best practices and practical experience with and proficiency in the skills of youth
development. The ideal candidate for the DOS/SEL Coordinator position must be flexible, well
organized, capable of taking initiative, and full of enthusiasm for students and families.
● Proven ability to relate well to diverse children and families.
● Minimum of three years of teaching or youth development experience.
● Experience in the field of school administration, counseling or other related student
support role.
● Valid certification to teach or work in GA public schools, or commiserate private school
credentials or training.
● A strong passion for working with youth.
● Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational and time management skills.
Physical Aspects of the position:
Additional physical requirements of this position could be endurance, including prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, walking, hiking, climbing, and stretching; requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate outdoor equipment and summer program activities; requires the ability to lift up to 50 lbs; and daily exposure to the sun, heat, and bugs.
The position is seasonal employment.
