POSITION SUMMARY

The Industrial Powder Coater is responsible for the preparation, application, and curing of powder coating materials on a variety of steel structures and industrial items. This position ensures that all work is performed according to job specifications, quality standards, and safety protocols. The role requires experience in industrial coating environments, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced setting.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Powder Coating Application

  • Operate powder coating equipment, including manual and automated guns, ovens, and spray booths.
  • Apply powder coatings to steel and other industrial substrates per job specifications.
  • Adjust equipment settings and gun techniques to ensure even coverage and desired film build.
  • Visually and physically inspect surfaces for proper coating coverage and cure.

Surface Preparation

  • Perform surface preparation tasks including cleaning, degreasing, masking, sanding, and blowing off with compressed air.
  • Work closely with the sandblast department to ensure items are properly blasted prior to coating.
  • Identify and report any surface defects, such as rust, pitting, or weld splatter, prior to coating.

Equipment Operation and Maintenance

  • Calibrate and maintain powder coating guns, booths, and ovens according to manufacturer specifications.
  • Monitor oven temperatures and dwell times to ensure proper curing.
  • Perform daily and weekly maintenance on equipment and keep logs as required.

Quality Control

  • Use mil thickness gauges to verify coating thickness according to specification sheets.
  • Conduct visual inspections to identify and correct defects such as orange peel, pinholes, runs, or poor adhesion.
  • Record batch numbers, color codes, and other traceability data on work orders or QC documents.

Safety and Compliance

  • Adhere to OSHA safety standards, including proper use of PPE (respirators, gloves, coveralls, etc.).
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area in compliance with 5S and environmental protocols.
  • Follow hazardous material handling procedures and ensure proper labeling and storage of all coating materials.

Coordination and Documentation

  • Read and interpret work orders, blueprints, and technical specifications.
  • Communicate with supervisors, quality control, and prep teams to coordinate workflow.
  • Document production activities, inspection results, and material usage accurately.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in industrial powder coating, preferably in a structural steel or heavy industrial environment.
  • Experience with manual powder coating guns and curing ovens.
  • Strong understanding of surface prep, coating application techniques, and curing processes.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work in hot or outdoor environments as needed.
  • High school diploma or GED.

Preferred

  • Experience coating large fabricated parts and steel structures.
  • Familiarity with coating specs such as AAMA, SSPC, or manufacturer data sheets.
  • Forklift certification or experience operating overhead cranes.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to have full range of mobility in upper and lower body, able to reach overhead, able to work in various positions, including, but not limited to, stooping, standing, bending over, sitting, kneeling, Squatting; use hands to handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance for extended periods of time. Be able to lift, pull and push material and equipment to complete assigned job tasks. Be able to lift 50 pounds. The employee will be exposed to shop elements such as noise, dust, fumes, and odors. This position requires physical activity performing somewhat strenuous daily activities in a primarily production environment. The work environment characteristics here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

WORK HOURS:

  • AM Shift: 6:00 AM – 2:30 PM
  • Monday to Friday (OT as needed).
  • Employment Type: Full-time

SALARY:

  • $27 per hour (DOE)
