Bookkeeper

Job Description

Full-Charge Bookkeeper (Part-Time, On-Site) — Charleston, SC

\n

~30 - 40 hours/week (heavier during initial buildout) | $26-$32 per hour

\n

\n

The company

\n

A decades-old specialty construction and land work business serving the Lowcountry. Revenue is primarily project-based, with heavily recurring components across several revenue streams. The company was recently purchased and the founding owner has stepped down. New ownership is investing in the business, and the accounting function is the first place we're building. This is a rare chance to get in at the ground floor of a proven business entering its next chapter.

\n

\n

The role

\n

You will be the only accounting professional in the business, and that's the opportunity. No layers, no committees, no waiting for permission. You'll report directly to the President, serve as a trusted advisor, and sit in quarterly board meetings alongside the President and our fractional CFO. You'll own the books end to end in QuickBooks Online and build something the company has never had: a true activity-based costing discipline that shows what every project and service line actually earns.

\n

Fair warning: you'll be thrown into the deep end of our accounting system from day one. We won't pretend otherwise. We're looking for someone who reads that and gets excited.

\n

\n

What you'll do

\n

    \n
  • Take full ownership of all accounting processes: AP/AR, bank and credit card reconciliations, payroll coordination, month-end close
  • \n

  • Design, implement, and administer an activity-based costing structure (QBO Projects, classes, cost tracking) so project-level and service-line margins are visible and trustworthy
  • \n

  • Identify issues, create solutions, and implement them, without being asked twice
  • \n

  • Clean up historical records and establish lasting reconciliation discipline
  • \n

  • Create, implement, and administer SOPs and process improvements across the accounting function
  • \n

  • Deliver monthly financials and job-level margin reporting to the President and board
  • \n

\n

\n

Who thrives here

\n

    \n
  • A self-starter who doesn't need, or want, to be micromanaged
  • \n

  • QuickBooks Online expert (ProAdvisor certification a plus): Projects, classes, bank feeds, custom reporting
  • \n

  • 5+ years of bookkeeping experience; construction, contracting, or other job-cost environments strongly preferred
  • \n

  • Someone with a track record of building processes where none existed, not just following ones handed to them
  • \n

  • Detail-obsessed, discreet, and energized by adding order to chaos
  • \n

  • Someone who wants their voice heard, wants to take charge of accounting, and wants to eventually build an accounting department around a growing business
  • \n

\n

\n

Why it's worth it

\n

We understand this role is demanding. That's the point. Hard work gets recognized here, and as the company grows, so will the opportunities inside it. You won't be a cog in an accounting department; you'll be the person who built it, with a direct line to leadership and a seat at the table from day one.

\n

And the role is only the starting point. If you want more hours or responsibility beyond it, all you have to do is ask. Our operating model is simple: identify problems, create solutions, present them to the President, execute. People who run that loop get more of the business to run.
