Summary/Objective:
The Food Service Worker is responsible for preparing and serving breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack, as well as special events, while maintaining compliance with the Food Safety and Sanitation Regulations in a timely yet effective manner.

Essential Functions

  1. Maintain daily menu production records.
  2. Maintain a clean kitchen and kitchen equipment at all times.
  3. ­­Assist in taking temperatures of food (at delivery and point of service) and equipment (freezer, refrigerator). Maintain up to date and organized records of temperature logs.
  4. Ensure that main kitchen operation needs, issues or problems are communicated in a timely and professional manner to Food Service Lead and Health and Nutrition Manager.
  5. Food Service Worker is responsible in receiving orders from vendors, ensuring that proper items have been delivered and organize food storage.
  6. Adhere to sanitation and safety procedures prescribed for the Early Head Start/Head Start kitchen in compliance with Health and Safety Regulations.
  7. Assemble food, dishes, utensils and supplies needed for timely meal preparation.
  8. Discard all utensils/dishware using approved sanitation methods. Return all items to their proper storage site.
  9. Participate in individualized continuing education plan such as, ServSafe Certification, Allergen Training, CPR and First Aid, Food Handler certification and other trainings required from Dimock Center and Child and Family.
  10. Assist in inspection of foods, including quality, quantity and appropriateness for service to children 4 months to 5 years of age.
  11. Assist in recording reports from staff related to acceptance/rejection of foods and communicating it to Food Service Lead and the Health and Nutrition Manager.
  12. Be aware and knowledgeable about food allergies and conditions of children. Ensure that appropriate foods are served.
  13. Able to work flexible hours as needed.
  14. Follow all general staff responsibilities including attending all meetings and training sessions as required.

  7. Demonstrates an understanding of food temperature/time controls
  8. Due to the diverse population we serve, bilingual is a plus
  9. Knows state and local code requirements for food service
  10. Food allergen certification training

Work Environment
The Food Service Worker operates in the kitchen and classrooms environments preparing and delivering meals to the classrooms.

Physical Demands

Standing, walking, sitting, lifting up to 40lbs, and dexterity for meal preparations.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
Food Service Worker hours are 7:30 am to 3:00 pm. It will involve monitoring portion sizes of meal components to ensure that meals are meeting the CACFP requirements. The position will also be responsible for assembling and serving breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snacks following the delivery schedule and maintaining food safety by using food allergen substitution list. Ensure that the kitchen operation needs, issues or problems are communicated in a timely and professional manner.

Required Education and Experience

  1. Minimum Requirement: High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent
  2. Experience with meal preparation and working in a school setting
  3. CPR & First Aid Certification
  4. Allergen Training Certificate within
  5. ServSafe Certification
  6. Food Handler Certification
