Job Description
The Division of Applied Social Sciences (DASS) at the University of Missouri invites applications for Assistant/Associate Professor of Agribusiness Management and MFA Chair in Agribusiness. The position supports teaching and research in DASS relating to agribusinesses, with a particular emphasis on cooperatives and producer-owned organizations. Areas of research relevant to this appointment may include new institutional economics, organizational economics, and transaction cost-based analysis of markets and organizations, as well as cooperative governance, management, finance, value chain coordination, collective action benefits to producers, and the interaction of these areas with cooperative performance and public policy implications. Candidates with backgrounds in economics, agricultural economics, and related fields are encouraged to apply. This is a nine-month appointment. The candidate hired at the Assistant Professor rank will be eligible for the endowed chair appointment upon successful promotion with tenure at the Associate Professor rank.
The successful candidate will have research and teaching interests that complement DASS’s existing strengths in agribusiness and cooperative leadership, the economics of institutions and organizations, natural resource economics, community and international development, and policy analysis. DASS is home to several research and outreach centers, including the Graduate Institute of Cooperative Leadership (GICL), the Food and Agricultural Policy Research Institute (FAPRI), the Rural and Farm Finance Policy Analysis Center (RaFF), the Financial Research Institute (FRI), the Interdisciplinary Center for Food Security, and the McQuinn Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership. DASS has a strong tradition of granting faculty extraordinary latitude to develop new and innovative centers, programs, and activities.
Position Responsibilities: While the assignment of specific responsibilities to the occupant of the MFA Chair will depend on the experience, credentials, and interests of the successful candidate, we anticipate drawing from the following areas for the assignment:
- Undergraduate teaching in areas relating to agribusiness economics, cooperative leadership, strategy, and related subjects.
- Graduate teaching in areas related to collective action, cooperative theory, new institutional economics, and/or public policy.
- A strong program of research and scholarship consistent with that of a faculty member in an AAU research university.
- A proven track record of obtaining external funding.
- Outreach activities linked to rural development, as well as entrepreneurial (collective and otherwise) initiatives.
Start Date: July 1, 2024, or later.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: PhD in economics, agricultural economics, or a related social sciences discipline.
Candidates will be evaluated on: Demonstrated capacity to be effective teachers, productive scholars, effective collaborators with DASS colleagues and other faculty in CAFNR and on the MU campus, and generally play a leadership role in an academic environment. Effectiveness of research, including publications in peer reviewed journals, and effectiveness in obtaining competitive external funding. Effectiveness of teaching. Success in working with undergraduate and graduate students in a learning and mentoring environment. Interpersonal skills and the ability to lead within an academic environment. Willingness to adapt as change arises.
