Assistant Professor, Maritime Economics and Management

The incumbent will work under the overall supervision of the Vice-President (Academic Affairs), and functionally under the Head of Port Management. As a faculty member at the World Maritime University, the Assistant Professor is expected to provide teaching/mentoring and research and publication and promote inter-university cooperation in areas related to maritime economics and management.

The Assistant Professor of Maritime Economics and Management is expected to contribute to the overall efforts of WMU to strengthen the economics component in its academic programmes. This position is therefore open to candidates with a wide range of interests and expertise in economic and management matters related to shipping and port operations and management. Areas of focus of potential candidates for this position may include, among others, maritime economics, business, and management.

Responsibilities

The Assistant Professor of Maritime Economics and Management is expected, under the supervision of the Vice-President (Academic Affairs) and functionally under the Head of Port Management, to be engaged in:

• teaching, including engagement in the MSc teaching programmes in Malmö, WMU Outreach Campuses and other locations as assigned; coordinating and participating in student field studies; mentoring of PhD and MSc students and supervision of research theses/dissertations in areas related to the expertise; maintaining scholarship in the form of publications in peer-reviewed journals, books, book chapters, etc.; developing research projects, submission of project proposals, and delivery of such projects; disseminating research findings at academic and professional conferences and meetings; maintain active engagement and remain up-to-date in area of expertise, including collaborating with UN agencies, EU bodies and relevant industry partners and professional bodies; being involved in distance learning (e-learning) programmes, PDCs, and capacity-building courses as required; serving on WMU committees and work groups, and active participation in administrative, academic, and curriculum duties; and undertake special projects and other duties as required.

Education

• PhD in the area of Maritime Economics, Policy, Operations, Management or a related subject for the position.

Experience

Essential

• A minimum of three years of experience, after obtaining a PhD, in teaching at the post-graduate level; Demonstrated knowledge of maritime economics and expertise in maritime businesses, such as shipping and port operations and management; Familiarity with IMO key instruments related to trade facilitation; A track record in maritime research and scholarly publication in maritime economics and management or other areas related to the position; Advanced knowledge of international trade and global supply chain.

Desirable

• Professional experience in working within or with shipping and port organizations;
• Sea-going and/or industry experiences are highly appreciated;
• Experience with the United Nations system; Experience in research project management in relation to the position and in capacity-building programs for developing countries; Experience in organizing conferences and seminars and fund-raising; Experience in economic impact assessment in the context of the UN Sustainability Goals and the major research areas at WMU; Relevant track record of consultancy/advisory activities in/for relevant international fora.

Languages

Essential

• Fluency in spoken and written English.

Desirable

• Knowledge of another UN language would be an advantage.
