Job Description
A rapidly growing wealth management firm is seeking a Tax Director to lead and expand its High Net Worth Tax Advisory practice. This individual will serve as a trusted advisor to ultra-high-net-worth individuals, families, executives, entrepreneurs, and family offices, providing sophisticated tax planning and compliance oversight while helping build a scalable tax platform integrated with the firm's broader wealth management offering.
The Tax Director will work directly with clients, financial advisors, attorneys, and outside professionals to deliver proactive tax strategies that preserve wealth, optimize tax efficiency, and support multi-generational planning objectives.
Key Responsibilities
Client Advisory & Tax Planning
- Serve as the primary tax advisor for a portfolio of high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth clients.
- Develop and implement sophisticated tax planning strategies related to income tax, estate tax, gift tax, trust taxation, and wealth transfer planning.
- Advise clients on liquidity events, business sales, equity compensation, concentrated stock positions, and investment-related tax matters.
- Collaborate with wealth advisors to integrate tax strategies into comprehensive financial and estate planning recommendations.
- Provide guidance regarding charitable giving strategies, private foundations, donor-advised funds, and philanthropic planning.
- Identify proactive planning opportunities throughout the year to minimize current and future tax liabilities.
Tax Compliance Oversight
- Oversee the preparation and review of complex individual, trust, gift, estate, partnership, and private foundation tax returns.
- Manage relationships with external accounting firms and tax service providers as needed.
- Ensure timely and accurate filing of all federal, state, and local tax obligations.
- Review tax projections, estimated payments, and year-end planning analyses.
- Monitor tax law developments and assess their impact on clients.
Practice Leadership
- Assist in building and scaling the firm's tax advisory practice.
- Develop processes, workflows, and best practices to support growth and operational efficiency.
- Mentor and develop tax professionals across the team.
- Participate in business development efforts and support advisor teams in client acquisition and retention initiatives.
- Contribute to the development of tax-related thought leadership and educational content for clients and advisors.
Qualifications
- CPA required; MST, JD, or LLM in Taxation is a plus.
- 10+ years of public accounting, family office, multi-family office, wealth management, or private client tax experience.
- Deep expertise in taxation of high-net-worth individuals, trusts, estates, partnerships, and closely held businesses.
- Strong knowledge of estate and gift tax planning strategies.
- Experience advising entrepreneurs, executives, private equity principals, hedge fund professionals, and family office clients.
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex client relationships and serve as a trusted advisor.
- Strong leadership, communication, and presentation skills.
Preferred Experience
- Experience within a wealth management firm, multi-family office, private client services practice, or boutique tax advisory firm.
- Exposure to private equity, hedge fund, venture capital, and alternative investment tax issues.
- Experience with multi-state tax planning and residency planning strategies.
- Prior responsibility for leading teams and developing client service offerings.
