GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Medical Assistant is a multi-skilled health professional who works interdependently with physicians and nurses to provide quality health care to the patient. Under general supervision, the Medical Assistant is responsible for the physical care of patients through professional nursing tasks of routine difficulty and directs routine activities of the nurses and physicians.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepares patients for examinations. Provides routine information related to medical treatments and procedures.
  • Measures and records vital signs. Collects specimens when required.
  • Prepares exam rooms, selects and lays out medical supplies and maintains medical equipment.
  • Records and reports patient information. Retrieves laboratory test results and patient files.
  • Escorts patients and visitors.
  • Performs services such as venapuncture, injections, EKG, X-Ray and PFT and basic lab tests.
  • Orders and maintains inventory of supplies.
  • Performs clerical functions related to medical activities and may coordinate patient referrals and verify insurance as a back up to receptionist as necessary.
  • May be required to change dressings, apply bandages, remove sutures administer CPR and other first aid procedures.
  • Perform accurate, legal and ethical documentation at all times.
  • Prepare and administer medications with physician authorizations.
  • Dispose of biohazard waste according to OSHA standards.

REQUIRED SKILLS:

Files already labeled material using a straightforward alphabetical, numerical or chronological system. Understands short notes, basic written instructions and forms. Writes short informal notes, fills out simple forms. Occasional use of more complex machines including word processors or personal computers. Performs a few simple laboratory or scientific procedures, records results as necessary.

POSITION SPECIFICATIONS: EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Associate of Applied Science Degree from accredited college program – to prepare for certification as a medical assistant (CMA). Two years of related experience and a high school level education or an equivalent combination of experience and education. Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as statistical inference. Ability to apply concept such as percentages, ratios and proportions to practical solutions.

OFFICE AND ADMINISTRATIVE SKILLS:

Keyboards letters, memos, and other moderately complex material. Enters and retrieves data from given sources on a general computer. Schedules and coordinates appointments as necessary, screens and refers callers and visitors to appropriate individual.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Occasional possibility of safety risks, regular multiple or conflicting demands, time, pressures, deadlines, emergencies. Regular sustained concentration. Considerable physical effort or high degree of fine finger or hand dexterity. Medical office clinic setting including office area and approximately 2-5 room areas for patient consultation and exam.
