The laboratory technicians in the Century Aluminum Central Laboratory are responsible for safely, accurately, and reliably performing the routine analyses required for the safe, efficient, and profitable operation of the Century Aluminum plants located in:


  • Sebree, Kentucky
  • Mt. Holly, South Carolina
  • Vlissingen, Netherlands
  • Grundartangi, Iceland
  • Kingston, Jamaica


The successful completion of these objectives requires a person with an unrelenting focus on safety, a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and excellent communication skills. In order to provide the requisite analyses in a timely manner, the individuals in this role share the responsibility of completing many of our analyses in the early morning to provide timely results for production employees to begin their shift.


In this role you will be expected to work a 5-day work week working 8-hour shifts, typically Monday through Friday. Shift start time will vary between 3AM and 7AM depending on laboratory needs, and additional hours may be required as operational demands dictate.


Responsibilities


  • Learn, accept and live Century Aluminum’s Safety Mission Statement
  • Audit the quality and validity of all phases of samples submitted to the laboratory for chemical analysis. Subsequent analysis of all process control, raw material, environmental, industrial hygiene and final product samples utilizing prescribed procedures.
  • Administer internal quality control practices required to ensure conformity of all sampling and subsequent analysis for verification of chemistry for all phases of plant materials by using complex analytical techniques.
  • Provide chemical analyses to operating departments using various computerized instruments, or by use of wet/gravimetric techniques.
  • Perform other functions in the various sections of the lab such as environmental, quantometer, transformer oil, metallographer, raw and process control material, as required to ensure the orderly completion of laboratory business.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on various types of instrumentation in the lab involving x-ray systems and other laboratory equipment.
  • Evaluate, advise, and recommend appropriate operational adjustments to ensure environmental systems are operated and maintained to conform to the intent and spirit of applicable EPA and OSHA legislation while maximizing production.
  • All instruments are calibrated and checked prior to any analyses being performed. If an instrument does not meet standard measures then troubleshooting process will begin until the problem is corrected. If the incumbent cannot solve the problem then the vendor is contacted for technical support.

Qualifications


  • A work history with demonstrated success working safely in a repetitive, task-focused environment while maintaining attention to detail.
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in a technical subject or equivalent combination of education and experience in aluminum reduction or manufacturing laboratory.
  • A history of building and sustaining good working relationships in a team environment; be achievement motivated and have a high energy level; effective planning and organizational skills; and effective communication skills (verbal, written, and listening).
