BEHAVIORAL SPECIALIST COMMUNITY SERVICES DIVISION

INTRODUCTION
The Behavioral Specialist is responsible for effecting positive behavioral change in campers during all sessions of Camp Accomplish at the Melwood Recreation Center in Nanjemoy, Maryland. The Behavior Specialist provides supportive interventions to campers and is the behavioral intervention coordinator and trainer for the Recreation Center seasonal team, ensuring that each participant, user group, and guest has a quality experience.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Determine functional behavior capabilities of campers at Camp Accomplish to design behavioral interventions when needed and work with staff to ensure provision of quality, person-centered services.
2. Assist staff to understand the function of behavior and appropriate behavior interventions.
3. Coordinate between campers, counselors, and families to develop least restrictive behavior interventions/strategies and resolve issues.
4. Assist campers to determine inappropriate behavior and develop appropriate actions for good interpersonal skills.
5. Understand typical school age conditions and accompanying behaviors, such as intellectual disabilities, traumatic brain injury, and autism.
6. Monitor behavior on a daily basis and document in electronic system.
7. Implement behavior support plans to measure goals and objective and ensure meeting them.
8. Monitor and train assigned staff as needed.
9. Coordinate with Assistant Camp Program Director to collect, monitor, and analyze data for ensuring program strategy effectiveness.
10. In concert with the Assistant Camp Program Director, the Behavior Specialist will plan for the safety and participation in all programming.
11. Adhere to and further the mission of Melwood by creating a supportive environment for participants and staff.
12. Performs other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED
The incumbent is supervised by the Camp Program Director.
PHYSICAL QUALIFICATIONS
Must be able to sit 50% of the time; stand/walk 50% of the time; must be able to lift, carry, push and/or pull 60 pounds, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl and reach; must be able to speak and hear. Must have good vision, as driving is required but the amount of driving will vary based on the need of division.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Special Education, Recreation, Psychology, or related field. Certification in medication administration, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), and Basic First Aid also required, or willingness to obtain certifications upon hire. Experience in working with people with differing abilities and behavioral issues is required. Must be willing to obtain certifications outlined above. Valid driver’s license and ability to obtain DOT physical is required.
WORKING CONDITIONS
This position may require work in extreme weather conditions. Must be able to work a varied schedule to include nights and weekends
