The Assistant Director of Laboratory Operations is responsible for assisting the Laboratory Operations Director with planning, organizing, implementing, and controlling of all unit activities including, interdepartmental relationships, and direction of department personnel as well as physician relations. Assist with the collection, processing, and accuracy of specimens to obtain data for the diagnosis and treatment of disease, in accordance with established hospital and laboratory polices. The Assistant Director will proactively participate in processes to guide patient care in the most efficient, productive, cost-effective manner possible. Is also responsible for assisting with the management of staff, meeting fiscal requirements, and compliance with The Joint Commission guidelines along with Federal and State regulations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
QUALITY
- Supports, role models and promotes an environment conducive with the Mission, Vision, and Values of the hospital and in accordance with the Service Excellence Standards of Behavior
- Demonstrates highly ethical conduct and moral behavior in personal and professional action and communication, consistent with the goals and objectives of Hillsboro Area Hospital
- Maintain confidentiality of all patients, hospital, or physician related information
- Focuses on quality standards.
- Participate in department and hospital performance improvement.
- Follows guidelines of safety (incident reporting), staff health/infection control (illness reporting), human resources, and performance improvement Is knowledgeable of general hospital and department specific policies and procedures and assist with their review and updates.
- Ensures that the hospital Compliance Plan and all governmental rules and regulations are followed.
- Schedules and attends monthly meetings with Laboratory Operations Director to review Monthly Meeting agenda.
- Updates LEM 90-day plans and assists with inputting monthly results as required.
- Assist the Laboratory Operations Director with hiring high quality individuals.
- Assist the Laboratory Operations Director with corrective action plans to ensure high quality standards are in place for the department or individual staff.
SERVICE
- Able to assist the manager direct, delegate, initiate, coordinate, organize, set priorities, and evaluate personnel work assignments as directed.
- Participates on committees, in book clubs, and special projects.
- Clearly identifies and responds to internal and external customer needs and requests.
- Works to exceed customer satisfaction.
- Monitors Patient Satisfaction Survey results and implements plans to meet patient-satisfaction goals.
- Generates confidence and sense of value in customer interaction.
- Assist with the creation, implementation, and evaluation of goals and objectives, policies, and standards for department, as well as staff development.
- Applies the principles of time management, conflict resolution, problem-solving, and delegation.
- Develop good relationships with executive management, department managers, supervisors, and staff.
- Maintain knowledge and skills necessary to communicate and interact with patients, visitors, and staff in the following age groups:
- Infant
- Pediatric/adolescent
- Adult
- Geriatric
- Oversees the collection and processing of specimens to obtain data for the diagnosis and treatment of disease, in accordance with established hospital and laboratory polices.
- Assures all laboratory staff members are competent to fulfill their assigned responsibilities.

FINANCIAL

- Makes recommendations for and actively participates in the operating and capital budget.
- Uses budgets and forecasts to improve financial performance.
- Schedules department hours to meet the needs of the patients and customers served, while maintaining appropriate productivity levels
- Initiates methods of cost containment
- Maintain adequate level of supplies.
GROWTH
- Assists with staff development by coaching and mentoring in a supportive, professional manner.
- Provides for professional growth of staff through identification of needs, facilitation of educational efforts, and evaluation.
- Assist and participates in monthly staff meetings, provides staff in-services as requested.
- Assist to ensure staff attend CPR and Umbrella Day annually.
- Assist with scheduling staff to attend Quarterly Meetings
- Supports peers and those in managerial/leadership roles by “managing up” in conversations with staff.
- Builds relationships and teams for the achievement of goals.
- Creates developmental opportunities so that others can grow.
- Anticipates future trends and consequences.
- Initiative-taking in requesting necessary direction / education to complete assignments.
- Utilizes critical thinking processes to resolve issues in accordance with hospital philosophy.
- Assist in development and guide implementation of the departments and the facility’s marketing plan.

Requirements:
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science required.
- Three years of laboratory experience preferred.
- Ability to pass specific competencies for this position.
- Ability to work under pressure with tight time constraints.
- Better than average human relations and organizational skills
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
- Maintain current Certification or Registration
- New staff will be required to certify within six months of their employment, if no current CPR card is available.
- Additional certifications may be required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Prolonged, extensive, or considerable sitting, standing, and walking.
- Required to climb, balance, stoop, and kneel.
- Required to use arms, hands, and fingers for repetitive grasping, pulling, and pushing and feeling.
- Frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Any workload exceeding 50 pounds will require assistance.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Works in a well-lighted, climate controlled, office setting.
- Eyestrain and other conditions from use of computer monitor may occur.
- May be exposed to communicable diseases, hypodermic/IV needles, unpleasant sights, odors, and materials.
- The noise level in the work environment is quiet to moderate.
CORPORATE COMPLIANCE
Receives training and/or attends necessary meetings to meet the criteria as outlined in Hillsboro Health’s Corporate Compliance Plan and Code of Conduct. Understands the responsibilities related to compliance and knows how to contact the Corporate Compliance Officer should there be any instance of question or concern regarding fraud and/or abuse.
