A machine operator is responsible for safely setting up, running, and monitoring production machinery to make quality parts to specification. The role also includes basic maintenance, documentation, and strict adherence to safety and quality standards.
Core responsibilities
- Set up machines at the start of the shift, including calibration, tooling changes, and basic adjustments according to production specs or work orders.
- Operate and monitor machines during production, adjusting feeds, speeds, or settings to maintain quality and efficiency.
- Feed raw materials or components into machines and remove, sort, or package finished parts.
- Inspect parts visually and with measuring tools (calipers, micrometers, gauges) to verify they meet quality standards.
- Perform routine cleaning and minor preventive maintenance (lubrication, filter changes, simple part replacement) and report major issues to maintenance.
- Record production data such as quantities, scrap, downtime, and quality checks on paper or in production systems.
- Follow all safety rules, lockout/tagout procedures when required, and maintain a clean, organized work area.
Typical requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent, plus prior manufacturing or machine operation experience preferred.
- Ability to read and follow work instructions, basic blueprints, or production schedules.
- Basic math and measurement skills, including use of common measuring devices.
- Physical ability to stand for long periods and lift materials or products as needed within safe limits.
- Strong attention to detail, reliability, and willingness to learn specific machines and processes.
