Job Description

This role focuses on operating mechanical and CNC punch press equipment in a production environment. You will use measuring tapes, calipers, and other hand-held measuring tools to ensure parts meet precise specifications. The position offers the opportunity to learn how to operate a variety of fabrication equipment and to progress into more advanced setup responsibilities over time.

Responsibilities

  • Operate mechanical and CNC punch press equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Use measuring tapes, calipers, and other hand-held measuring tools to verify that parts meet required specifications.
  • Follow production instructions, work orders, and blueprints to produce accurate parts.
  • Perform basic machine operation tasks, including starting, stopping, and monitoring machine cycles.
  • Inspect finished parts for quality, accuracy, and conformance to blueprint requirements.
  • Maintain a strong focus on safety and follow all safety procedures and guidelines at all times.
  • Keep work areas clean, organized, and free of hazards to support a safe and efficient production environment.
  • Assist with basic machine adjustments and support setup activities as skills develop.
  • Work collaboratively with team members and supervisors to meet production goals and quality standards.
  • Participate in on-the-job training and in-house apprenticeship programs to expand skills in machine operation, programming, and setup.

Essential Skills

  • At least 1 year of machine operating experience, preferably with punch presses, brake presses, or other fabrication equipment (preferred but not strictly required).
  • Ability to accurately read and use a tape measure.
  • Strong attention to detail to ensure parts meet specifications and quality standards.
  • Strong dedication to safety and consistent adherence to safety procedures.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and comfort working with fabrication machinery.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, including reading basic blueprints.
  • Ability to use inspection tools such as calipers and other measuring devices (experience preferred).

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience operating punch press, brake press, laser, or other sheet metal fabrication equipment is a plus.
  • Blueprint reading experience is preferred and will support advancement opportunities.
  • Prior experience using inspection tools and gauges is preferred.
  • Interest in learning machine setup, programming, and advanced fabrication processes.
  • Willingness to participate in a state-approved apprenticeship program and ongoing training.
  • Mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn new equipment and technologies.

Work Environment

This position is based in a modern, climate-controlled sheet metal fabrication facility that prioritizes safety and is recognized as one of the safest manufacturing environments in the industry. The shop features high-end, advanced fabrication equipment, including mechanical and CNC punch presses and related machinery, with ongoing investments in new technology. The work environment is highly team-oriented, where leadership takes time to know employees and foster a supportive culture focused on growth and development. A state-approved, four-year apprenticeship program is offered on site, with an instructor visiting weekly to teach programming and setup for the equipment on the floor, supporting progression to journeyman sheet metal worker roles. The facility provides all required personal protective equipment at no cost, including safety work boots after the contracting period or when strong workmanship is demonstrated. Work is performed on a first-shift schedule in a clean, organized, and safety-focused production setting.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Fridley, MN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $23.00 - $28.00/hr.
