Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Tax Manager to lead and oversee tax compliance, planning, and advisory services for a diverse portfolio of individual, corporate, partnership, and nonprofit clients. The Tax Manager will ensure accurate and timely preparation and review of federal and state tax returns (including Forms 1040, 1120, 1120-S, and 990), manage client relationships, mentor staff, and support strategic tax planning initiatives while maintaining compliance with current tax laws and regulations.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and review preparation of individual (Form 1040), corporate (Form 1120), S-corporation (Form 1120-S), partnership, and nonprofit (Form 990) tax returns to ensure accuracy and timely filing.
- Provide tax planning and consulting services for clients, identifying opportunities to minimize tax liabilities and advising on transactional, structural, and compliance matters.
- Supervise, train, and mentor tax staff and senior associates; delegate assignments, conduct performance reviews, and promote professional development.
- Serve as primary client contact for complex tax issues, responding to inquiries, representing clients before tax authorities as needed, and maintaining strong client relationships.
- Stay current on federal, state, and local tax law changes and evaluate impacts on clients; implement process improvements and best practices for tax compliance and reporting.
- Coordinate and manage tax audit responses and support, including gathering documentation, preparing workpapers, and liaising with auditors and government agencies.
- Prepare and review technical tax research and memoranda, ensuring positions taken are defensible and well-documented.
- Collaborate with other departments (advisory, accounting, and financial reporting) to integrate tax considerations into broader client engagements and business strategies.
- Develop and maintain efficient tax workflow, ensuring deadlines are met and workpapers meet firm quality standards.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; Masters in Taxation or related advanced degree preferred.
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license required or active pursuit of CPA with clear timeline for completion.
- Minimum of 6+ years of progressive tax experience, including direct experience preparing and reviewing Forms 1040, 1120, 1120-S, and 990.
- Strong technical knowledge of federal and state tax laws, regulations, and reporting requirements.
- Proven experience managing tax teams and mentoring staff, with excellent delegation and project-management skills.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and written/verbal communication skills; ability to explain complex tax concepts to clients and stakeholders.
- Proficiency with tax software (e.g., Lacerte, ProSeries, UltraTax, or similar) and Microsoft Office; experience with tax research tools (e.g., CCH, RIA) a plus.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple engagements, meet deadlines, and maintain high attention to detail and quality.
