Tarping Station/Crane Operator
Job Summary
We are seeking a skilled, detail-oriented, and safety-focused Tarping Station/ Crane Operator to manage crane operations within our dedicated tarp building/station. This role is responsible for supporting outside carriers by operating overhead or specialized cranes to assist with the tarping process—without performing hands-on load securement.
The primary focus of this position is to ensure efficient, high-volume traffic flow through the tarp station, minimizing delays and coordinating yard activities to optimize load-out efficiency. The Tarp Station Operator plays a critical role in daily yard operations, including directing truck movement, assisting with loading coordination, and supporting logistics functions in a fast-paced flatbed trucking environment.
Key Responsibilities
Crane Operations
- Operate overhead cranes or designated lifting equipment safely and precisely within the tarp station.
- Assist in the tarping process by lifting, positioning, and staging tarps, spreader bars, and related accessories.
- Ensure all lifting activities are conducted in accordance with safety and operational standards.
Traffic & Yard Flow Management
- Maintain responsibility for the overall efficiency and flow of truck traffic through the tarp building.
- Direct drivers to designated staging and tarping areas.
- Sequence truck arrivals and departures to minimize wait times and bottlenecks.
- Monitor yard traffic patterns and adjust as needed to prevent congestion.
Yard Operations Support
- Guide trucks into proper loading and tarping positions.
- Assist with trailer spotting and load-out coordination.
- Support general logistics activities, including:
- Communicating with drivers
- Verifying paperwork
- Escalating issues to supervisors or leads as needed
Safety & Compliance
- Perform pre- and post-shift inspections of cranes and lifting equipment.
- Report maintenance needs or equipment issues promptly.
- Ensure compliance with all safety protocols, including:
- Lockout/Tagout procedures
- Proper rigging practices
- Company policies and regulatory standards (e.g., OSHA, DOT where applicable)
- Enforce yard safety rules, including speed limits and restricted access areas.
Communication & Coordination
- Communicate effectively with drivers, yard personnel, load securement teams, and dispatch.
- Address and resolve operational issues quickly to maintain workflow continuity.
- Coordinate with team members to ensure smooth transitions between yard processes.
Performance Tracking & Continuous Improvement
- Track and report key operational metrics such as:
- Throughput times
- Truck dwell time in the tarp station
- Delays or inefficiencies
- Provide feedback and recommendations to improve yard performance and efficiency.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Previous experience operating overhead cranes or similar lifting equipment preferred.
- Experience in a yard, warehouse, or flatbed trucking environment is highly desirable.
- Strong understanding of safety practices related to material handling and yard operations.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-traffic environment with multiple priorities.
