SENIOR DESIGN MANAGER JOB DESCRIPTION

The Senior Design Manager will manage the design development and coordination of construction projects through concept, design, and preconstruction phases, and supporting project teams through construction and closeout. The ideal candidate will serve as a key liaison between design clients, consultants, internal stakeholders, and construction teams to ensure that design intent aligns with project objectives, budget, and schedule.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsibilities include but are not limited to those listed below. These duties describe the minimum responsibilities of this position and are subject to change to accommodate the needs of the company.
- Lead and manage the design process from concept through construction documents and delivery.
- Oversee and coordinate the work of consultant teams, as needed.
- Ensure design compliance with regulatory requirements, codes, and industry standards.
- Collaborate with preconstruction and estimating teams to validate design scope, cost, and constructability.
- Manage various preconstruction activities.
- Lead value engineering efforts while maintaining design integrity.
- Manage design change processes, document reviews, and approvals.
- Chair design coordination meetings and facilitate communication across multidisciplinary teams.
- Conduct design risk assessments and proactively resolve technical or design-related issues.
- Monitor and manage design milestones to align with project schedule and deliverables.
- Conduct constructability reviews and advise design teams on preferred systems and details for construction.
- Provide internal design and detailing to support project teams during construction.
- Provide mentorship and guidance to junior staff or coordinators as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelors degree in Architecture, Engineering, or Construction Management.
- 10+ years of experience in design management within the construction industry.
- Proven experience managing the design of large-scale commercial, infrastructure, or mixed-use developments.
- Strong knowledge of building codes, construction methods, materials, and systems.
- Proficiency in design software (AutoCAD, Bluebeam, etc.) and project management tools.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Professional licensure (PE, RA) or PMP certification is a plus.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

- Ability to drive innovative and sustainable design solutions.
- Experience working for or closely with general contractors or design-build firms.
- Strong financial and budgeting acumen related to design scope and procurement.
