Position Summary
The Licensed Adolescent Counselor provides direct clinical services to children and adolescents (11-17) with co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders. This role includes assessment, treatment planning, individual, group, family therapy, case management, and collaboration with interdisciplinary treatment teams. The therapist ensures that services meet state, federal, and accreditation standards while supporting the organization's mission to provide compassionate, person-centered, evidence-based care.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Essential Functions:
1. Provides therapeutic care, treatment, and rehabilitation of adolescence ages 11-17 and cooperates, coordinates, and consults with parents, schools, and guardians as appropriate.
2. Provide evidence-based individual, group, and family therapy addressing substance use, trauma, and mental health diagnoses/substance use treatment. Provides psychoeducation and relapse prevention groups tailored to adolescents.
3. Collaborate with psychiatrists, medical providers, social agencies, legal entities, and managed care organizations, hospitals, clinics, courts, and gatekeepers to meet clients' needs and assist them in utilizing provided resources.
4. Prepares individualized treatment plans in collaboration with youth, families, and the care team. Collects client and family histories and generates all appropriate clinical documentation and reports as required daily.
5. Conducts comprehensive biopsychosocial assessments for and evaluations based on ASAM (American Society of Addiction Medicine) criteria for adolescence.
6. Assesses treatment plans and conducts reviews using the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders for Adolescence) and screens regularly for suicide ideation and homicide ideation SI/HI.
7. Determines the appropriate level of care according to ASAM adolescent criteria.
8. Observes clients throughout treatment to determine the need for continued services, transfer, or discharge.
9. Demonstrates a working knowledge of child development, stages of change, and can utilize the use of multiple therapeutic modalities and clinical interventions.
10. Develops continued services or discharge/transfer plan to ensure access to appropriate levels of care.
11. Continue special training in areas designated by the Supervisor. May also comply with requirements of LCADC and LSW/LAC licensure.
12. Attends, participates, and when necessary, case consultations, facilitate special events, such as seminars, lectures, retreats, trips, workshops, etc.
13. May be required for weekend duty and/or evening duty as needed.
14. Maintain compliance with all licensing, accreditation, and confidentiality requirements (HIPAA, 42 CFR Part 2).
15. Performs other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Engage in ongoing professional development and training in adolescent mental health and substance use treatment best practices.
Minimum Requirements:
Education:
Master's Degree in Counseling, Psychology, or Social Work
Licensure (Required - NJ):
Current LSW or LAC License or Graduating in May
Experience:
Minimum of 1-2 years of clinical experience with children/adolescents in mental health or substance use treatment.
Experience in evidence-based modalities such as CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing, and trauma-informed care strongly preferred.
Experience working with co-occurring disorders and diverse populations.
