POSITION: Corrections Officer (FLSA Status: NON-EXEMPT)

REPORTS TO: LieutenantCO’s / Chief CO’s (in absence ofLieutenantCO’s)

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Corrections Officer position involves providing a safe and secure institution for the inmates placed in the custody of the Somerset County Jail and for fellow correctional officers. The Corrections Officer is directly responsible to the Chief Corrections Officer on shift and inevitably the Deputy Warden and Warden.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:

Any combination equivalent to education and experience that provides the required skill and knowledge is qualifying. Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:

  • High School diploma or GED equivalency (required)
  • One (1) year of corrections work (preferred)
  • Valid Driver’s License

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must possess the ability observe inmates, document daily happenings and records including medical logs, handle messages, deal directly with the public, escort inmates to and from locations throughout the prison and work with court-related personnel, police, bondsmen and parole agents in a professional manner. In addition, individuals will be subject to potentially hostile and physically threatening environments in the course of working in the prison.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Specific job duties include the following:

· Will put into practice any new directives as issued by administration (i.e., Warden, Lieutenants).

· Will notify Lieutenant CO’s (Chief CO’s in absence of Lieutenant CO’s) of any problems with communications or radios.

· Assists in dealing with inmate behavior problems, escorting emergencies, verifies head counts, utensil, razor and key counts.

· Assists in the signing in and out of visitors for inmates, work release, inmates going to and from work, counselors, clergy, police attorneys, probation officers, etc.

· Assists and performs escorting inmates and representatives to their designated areas.

· Assists in supervision of all phases of inmate duties. Assists in supervision of clean up, trustees, requests, commissary, work release, laundry, recreation, library, various church services and AA meetings.

· Assists and performs processing of inmates in and out of the institution, works closely with police, bondsmen, parole agents, and court-related personnel in the processing of inmates.

· Assists and performs quarantine observation of inmates, security checks, cell searches, lock up, incident and disciplinary reporting, minor first aid, behavioral problems and identification of contraband.

· Performs fifteen minute suicide watches. Assists in restraining problem inmates threatening themselves, others, or the security of the institution, interviewing inmates, strip searches of inmates and documents trustees on duty.

· Assists in performing logging of daily happenings, documentation of records, medical prescription logs, shift reports, legal papers filed and/or obtained, court and magistrate schedules pertaining to inmates, telephone and reception window.

· Assists in observation of camera monitors.

· Assists in the removal of garbage from areas, notifying maintenance of any problems including equipment failures. Operate electronic doors and observe panels.

· Assists with transportation of inmates.

· Performs other duties as assigned.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand or walk for extended periods, keyboard, write, talk and hear. The employee may be subject to physical standards including restraining inmates and dealing with dangerous and volatile situations on occasion. Employees will be forced to perform self-defense in unusual circumstances. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
