Job Description

The General Studies Director is a senior academic leader responsible for the quality and

execution of the General Studies program across grades 1–8. This role provides strong

leadership in curriculum development, academic programming, assessment, and teacher

growth. The General Studies Director works closely with school leadership to strengthen

academic outcomes and foster a culture of excellence and continuous improvement.

1. Curriculum Leadership

Develop, maintain, and oversee a cohesive General Studies curriculum for each grade level,

aligned with state standards and school directives. Ensure curriculum maps clearly outline

skills and standards, texts and books by grade level, and all instructional materials and

resources used. Regularly review and refine curriculum to ensure vertical alignment and

age-appropriate rigor.

● Plan and oversee academic enrichment initiatives and extracurricular programming

that extend learning beyond the classroom, including Reading Challenge, Spelling

Bee, STEM Fair / Inquiry Expo, History & Geography Fair, and math competitions

● Design and lead a school-wide Electives Hour in which all students participate in

structured specials and enrichment programming. Oversee planning, logistics,

staffing, and implementation to ensure a meaningful and well-run experience.

Examples of enrichment offerings may include Art, Drama, Chess, Digital Design,

Coding/Robotics, Journalism (School Newspaper/Podcast), Entrepreneurship, Yoga,

and Martial Arts.

● Oversee the effective and responsible use of educational technology across

classrooms, including Smartboards, Chromebooks, GoGuardian, and other

instructional or monitoring tools. Support teachers in integrating technology in ways

that meaningfully enhance student learning.

2. Student Progress, Assessment & Academic Support

● Implement school-wide academic assessments two to three times per year.

● Analyze assessment data to guide instructional improvements, identify trends, and

strengthen teacher support. Ensure clear and accurate academic reporting to

families.

● Collaborate with teachers and school leadership to develop and implement

academic or behavioral support plans for students requiring additional intervention.

Monitor progress and ensure appropriate follow-through to promote student growth

and success.

3. Instructional Oversight, Teacher Support & Mentorship

● Provide consistent instructional oversight to ensure curriculum pacing aligns with

academic goals and that all planned material is implemented effectively and

consistently across classrooms.

● Meet regularly with teachers to monitor curriculum coverage and instructional

quality. Support teachers in translating curriculum into strong daily lesson planning

and high-quality instruction.

● Mentor and coach teachers through regular check-ins, classroom observations, and

constructive feedback. Provide guidance on classroom management strategies and

student behavior challenges.

● Facilitate meaningful professional development opportunities and cultivate a

supportive, growth-oriented teaching culture that promotes continuous improvement

and instructional excellence.

Leadership & Communication

● Serve as a visible, strong instructional leader within the school.

● Communicate clearly and effectively with teachers, administrators, and families when

appropriate.

● Collaborate closely with the school’s leadership team to advance academic goals.

● Demonstrate strong organizational skills, follow-through, and professional judgment.

● Excellent communication, mentoring, and relationship-building skills.
