Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY

The Molecular Microbiology General Supervisor will oversee day-to-day laboratory operations, supervise some laboratory staff, perform testing on patient specimens, and ensure adherence to all applicable compliance requirements.


RESPONSIBILITIES

· Fulfill General Supervisor duties in a clinical molecular infectious disease laboratory

· Process patient specimens using a real-time PCR platform

· Data analysis and reporting of test results

· Perform equipment maintenance according to manufacturer specifications

· Prepare general laboratory reagents

· Monitor QA/QC records and ensure inspection readiness at all times

· Coordinate with Laboratory Director and Technical Supervisor

· Supervise laboratory staff

· Adhere and ensure laboratory staff are adhering to OSHA, HIPAA, and other safety practices

· Identify and report unsafe equipment, conditions and practices so that they may be corrected prior to an incident


REQUIRED SKILLS

· Familiarity with CLIA/CAP/COLA regulatory requirements

· Comprehensive understanding of PCR workflow and molecular diagnostics principles

· Organized and can work independently

· Microsoft Office

· LIS/LIMS experience required

· Good interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to supervise a team of employees


Minimum State and CLIA Requirements (Must Meet One):

  • Valid Tennessee general medical laboratory technologist license with four (4) years of full-time lab experience (30+ hours/week), acquired and one (1) year of high complexity CLIA testing lab experience after qualifying as a technologist.
  • Valid Tennessee medical laboratory technologist license limited to one category (chemistry, hematology, immunohematology, or microbiology) with four (4) years of full-time lab experience and one (1) year of high complexity CLIA testing lab experience after qualification. The license must align with the area of current authorization.
  • Valid Tennessee special analyst license limited to one subspecialty with four (4) years of full-time clinical lab experience and one (1) year of high complexity CLIA testing lab experience after qualification. The license must correspond to the current subspecialty.
  • Licensed physician (MD, DO, DPM) in Tennessee or holder of a doctoral degree in chemical, physical, or biological science, plus two (2) years of post-graduate clinical lab experience in a laboratory specialty under a doctoral-level director and a one (1) year of high complexity CLIA testing lab experience.

CONTINUING EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

· Documentation of sixty (60) clock hours of continuing education. (45 clock hours of management and 15 clock hours of technical courses.) At least eight (8) clock hours of management courses must be in a classroom or workshop setting.


ADDITIONAL PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

· 1-2 two years of experience in a molecular CLIA licensed clinical laboratory

  • Ability to read and comprehend English and follow instructions

· Good communication and critical thinking skills

  • Understanding of statistics
  • Ability to creatively think under pressure and handle high stress levels, changing environments, and possible irregular work hours
  • Ability to recognize potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens and/or hazardous chemicals in the workplace and execute safety protocols in the event of exposure or spill

· Must be able to demonstrate competency for all required diagnostic tests and other areas of assignment within 3 months of hire date

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to climb stairs, lift 35lbs, sit or stand for long periods, and walk/bend down
  • Visual and auditory acuity and good eye/hand coordination
