JOB SUMMARY
Provides professional nursing care under supervision for clinic patients.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Escorts patients to exam room and assists in determining medical problems.
- Takes vital signs and assists patients in patient flow through the clinic.
- Prepares exam rooms and instruments for examination and testing.
- Checks appointment schedule and assists receptionists with providers’ patient schedule.
- Ensures that lab reports, x-rays and other information are in patient records.
- Assists providers with minor diagnostic procedures and treatments as directed. Performs general nursing care to patients. Administers prescribed medications and treatments in accordance with nursing standards.
- Issues out-patient materials. Assists in application and patient instruction.
- Schedules patients for testing procedures and for appointments with referring physicians.
- Relays information to patient per provider’s recommendation. Calls patient’s reports to them.
- Assists with receiving, logging and collecting specimens. Prepares specimens for technical testing.
- Performs laboratory testing as directed.
- Operates and cleans laboratory equipment, glassware and instruments. Gets instruments ready to be sterilized. Cleans work area. Ensure exam rooms are ready for the next day.
- Checks inventory of supplies and assists with placing orders.
- Enhances professional growth and development through in-service meetings and education programs.
- Attends required meetings and participates in committees as requested.
- Maintains patient confidentiality.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS/ENVIRONMENT
Must be able to speak, read and write in English; see, hear, use fine motor skills, eye-hand coordination, and tactile abilities; follow multiple verbal and written instructions. Should possess problem-solving skills and the ability to analyze simple data. Must be able to make rational decisions based on factual information. Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination to use computer keyboard. Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time. Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds with help. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Requires visual acuity and normal color perception. Requires working under stressful conditions.
Typical Working Conditions: Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a clinic environment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of examination, diagnostic, and treatment room procedures. Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to maintain a safe work environment. Skill in assisting in a variety of treatments and medications as directed. Skill in taking vital signs. Skill in maintaining records and recording test results. Skill in using various types of equipment for examination and treatment procedures. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and the public. Ability to maintain quality control standards. Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations. Ability to read, understand and respond to details of oral and written instructions. Ability to communicate clearly. Must understand and support HIPAA privacy practices and that privacy will be evaluated along with the other job duties.
Education: Prefer graduation from a Medical Assistant Program, Certified Nursing Assistant, or Certified Medication Aide program.
Experience: Preferred one year of work experience in a clinic setting.
Certification/Licensure: Prefer valid certificate for Medical Assistant. CPR certification.
