GENERAL DESCRIPTION

This is semi-skilled work in the operations and maintenance of the activated sludge wastewater treatment plant, and reclaimed water facilities. Work involves training in the operation of an activated sludge wastewater treatment plant, with biological nutrient removal, and assisting in both preventive and corrective maintenance of plant equipment, machinery and related apparatus. Performs grounds maintenance at the wastewater treatment plant and reclaimed water facilities. Work is carried out under the general supervision of the Chief Operator, Lead Operator and/or shift wastewater plant operator. Work is reviewed through observation, conversation and evaluation of results achieved.



ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Work involves training in the operation and process control of an activated sludge wastewater treatment plant, with biological nutrient removal. Inspects plant control panels, equipment, machinery and apparatus to insure all are operating properly. This position assists with preventive and corrective maintenance of plant equipment, machinery and other related apparatus. Example: equipment lubrication, oil changes, pump installation, and repairs.
  • Performs basic lab analysis, records data, reviews recording charts and meters and makes appropriate adjustments. Collects wastewater samples according to schedule at assigned locations.
  • Ability to maintain an effective working relationship with supervisor and employees
  • Must be able to perform administrative work using a computer. Working knowledge of the Microsoft Office software package is essential.
  • Performs any other duties or tasks that may be assigned.



KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of operating principles and procedures applicable to wastewater treatment, pumping stations, and reclaimed water distribution.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work environment.



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent recognized certification.
  • Ability to follow routine procedures.
  • Must be able to follow verbal, as well as, written instruction. Must complete pre-requisite coursework and pass the State of Florida Class 'C' Wastewater Operator Certification within one year of employment.
  • Must pass the pre-employment General knowledge Test.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid State of Florida driver's license.

    Hammers/sledge hammers, screw drivers, standard/socket types, wrenches hand/impact, ratchets/sockets/extensions/universals hand/impact, pliers, knives, dykes, wire/bolt cutters, hand saw, press, chisels, punches, easy-out, tap and die, pipe-threader, cutter/tube cutter, welder, (electric/gas), oilers, funnels, grease, caulking gun, electrical multimeter, megger, jack hammer, sewer king, vactor truck, TV camera equipment, portable compressor, generator, well point, mud hog, portable pumps, pullers, press (4-ton), wire brushes, shovels, pry bars, picks, axes, lawn mowers, weed eaters, street blowers, edgers, lab glassware, pipets, beakers, flasks, burettes, magnetic mixer, pH meter, DO meter, Hach DR2700 spectrophotometer, water bath/incubator/muffle furnace, scale, microscope, TKN equipment, automatic and hand sampling devices, fire extinguisher, telephone, calculator, and communication radio.



  • PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk, standing, bending, and working on a computer. Work requires very frequent standing, walking, sitting, lifting objects less than 40 lbs., bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, digging with a shovel, reaching over head, kneeling, climbing, speaking, hearing, listening, and reading. Frequently works with chemicals and in extreme weather, noxious fumes, heights and confined spaces. Occasionally works in areas of excessive noise. Work requires operating a pickup truck on and off road, a commercial zero-turn lawn mower, and a lawn tractor equipped with a front end bucket and mower deck.


  • JOB LOCATION

    All City owned buildings, parks, grounds and recreation facilities. Any off-site locations and facilities utilized as part of the City's participation or involvement in an event, activity or job assignment.
