Commercial Underwriter
Location: Boston, MA
$80- 120k, plus full benefits!
Job Summary
This role is responsible for the assessment and appraisal of insurance applications to determine risk eligibility in accordance with available program guidelines. The Underwriter will apply independent judgment and industry knowledge to evaluate submissions and collaborate with brokers, carriers, and internal stakeholders via phone, email, and in-person communication.
Key Responsibilities
- Review insurance applications, loss control reports, and other supporting documents to determine risk eligibility.
- Analyze risk experience based on the business class and assess potential losses related to catastrophes, severity, or frequency.
- Rate new or renewal policies or verify the accuracy of prior ratings.
- Use underwriting systems to develop policy information for quoting and issuance.
- Prepare quotations and respond to inquiries from agents, policyholders, or prospects.
- Provide guidance and feedback to agents regarding application status and acceptance likelihood.
- Process and review endorsements, cancellations, and renewal requests.
- Gather any additional documentation necessary to support underwriting decisions.
- Participate in marketing visits to agency partners to maintain strong business relationships.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Valid Producer’s License required.
- Book of business in the area is a must!
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in insurance underwriting or related activities.
- Proficient with standard computer systems and software.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail and analytical capabilities.
- Demonstrated negotiation skills and sound judgment.
- Familiarity with insurance coverage forms and their application to risk exposure.
- Understanding of industry regulations and internal underwriting standards.
- Ability to work independently and meet deadlines within structured guidelines.
- Strong interpersonal skills for collaboration with internal teams and external underwriters.
- Completion of relevant industry courses, designations, or licensing preferred.
